Vai's most accessable album to date. With - apart from one exception - one half singing, one half instrumental. Favourites include the the wonderful 'Crying Machine' (makes you wonder why he insists on going SO leftfield when he can come up with something as stupendous as this(!)); 'Mysterious Murder . . .'; & the wonderful title track(s); Of the singing side 'Brother' is brillliant, along with 'Damn You', 'Aching Hunger' & 'When I Was . . .' (which is so daft that I sat with my mouth open listening to it the first time I heard it!). The closer, 'Warm Regards' just rounds things off nicely. Actually the whole thing doesn't have a bad track on it - even the 'interludes'. IT's Vai's feelgood album.

Just when Satch was going all weird & electronic Vai decided to come up with this(!) It's a funny ol' world, indeed . . .

If you have avoided Steve Vai because you think he's too weird - and he is weird(!) - then take a chance and have a go at this one.

This album contains some of the best guitar tones ever recorded and anyone serious about playing modern rock guitar music should do themsleves a favour and buy this. It kicks off with the Satriani-esque There's a fire in the house. It's a great song to wake you up in the morning! Phase 1 contains many different musical styles, ranging from melodic rock to hard rock to uncomprimising industrial, the list goes on. Phase 1 ends with the mammoth Fire Garden Suite which manages to cram all these musical styles into a 10 minute masterpiece which i'm sure would even leave frank zappa scratching his head. Phase 2 shows that Vai can write some cool ass riffs and lyrics and not just blistering guitar instrumentals. The album is structured in an unusual way to begin with but after the Fire Garden Suite, Vai seems to let you down slowy until the final song, Warm Regards. The song has a mysterious christmas feel which make you feel warm and cozy and is a fantastic way to end an album which is quite hectic in places. Overall this is a very unique album from a very unique musician. Even if you aren't a guitarist i would still reccomend it if you like great music!

......no really! I don't understand what people don't like about 'Fire Garden'. I still can't decide which album i like best - this or 'Passion And Warfare'.
Phase 1 from the bomb-track 'There's a Fire in the House' to the end of the 'Fire Garden Suite' is almost wordless, which is good, because we need to listen to how great the guitar playing is. Phase 2, from 'Deepness'/'Little Alligator', right through to the end of 'Warm regards'* is much better than some people make it out to be. 'Aching Hunger' 'Damn You' and 'Genocide' (all in phase 2) are all hugely pleasurable to play with, so anybody who likes playing, and likes good technical guitar music, will love this album.

* 'Warm regards' - highly under-rated as one of the worlds most beautiful, emotive pieces of music. It is the only possible way to end this epic album: Another like 'There's a Fire in the House' would have left us wanting it to never end, and the album would have been a little disappointing.
