Complete anthology of two influential R&B indie labels,
By
This review is from: The Fire & Fury Story (Audio CD)
Bobby Robinson debuted in the music industry in 1946, when he opened his record shop in Harlem's 125th Street (the first black-owned business there), and in in the fifties established many record labels like Robin Records or Whirlin' Disc Records. However, his major contribution is the foundation of two indie labels that were pivotal in the R&B scene: Fury and Fire. In these labels, Robinsons produced and published singles by important names like Wilbert Harrison, Elmore James, Buster Brown, Lightnin' Hopkins, Lee Dorsey, Gladys Knight and the Pipes, Johnny Ace or King Curtis.
This anthology covers the most interesting hits and misses of those two labels, and is a piece of musical history. The first CD is devoted to doo-wop acts, and is probably the weakest one. The second disc -the strongest- is focused in R&B and soul, while the blues rules in the third CD. The sound is good, and the liner notes very complete, including detailed information of the labels and artists. And the song selection is difficult to beat, jumping from Lee Dorsey's 'Do Re Mi' or King Curtis' 'Soul Twist' to Lighning Hopkin's 'Mojo Hand' or Champion Jack Dupree's 'Shake Baby Shake'.

Finally all of Bobby Robinson's labels in one set, but sadly...,

This review is from: The Fire & Fury Story (Audio CD)
For the first time, a label (Charly)has captured most of the pertinent recordings from the various labels Bobby Robinson founded: Fire/Fury/Enjoy/Red Robin/Fling/Everlast & Whirlin Disc and put them in one 3CD box set. Liner notes are great, packaging is great HOWEVER, there appears to be a rampant pressing problem with CD#3 that makes it a hit or miss affair regarding playability via a DVD player (including your computer). Older CD-only players have a better chance at playing I've found. I'm on my 3rd brand new copy and the problem has been persistent. So buyer beware! I've been able to inform Snapper Music - whom distributes Charly pressings - but good luck in getting a hold of someone at Charly - they are almost a non-existent organization.
