I'm sorry... but. 9 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
Seeing how 90% of this book's reviews have been done by fanboys, I thought I would toss in my thoughts.

I would like to say first that for the most part I did enjoy reading Death Force and that I genuinely looked forward to the sequel. However, when I picked up Fire Force I discovered 252 pages of utter tedium. This novel is like a bad carcrash between a dumb action movie (where everyone has endless ammunition, is extremely short sighted and moves at a snail's pace) and Wikipedia. Also several points are near carbon copies of what was written in Death Force.

Now for the main event. I do realise that the actual story section of the book is 485 pages long, but on page 252 there is, in my personal opinion, such a complete lump of utter rubbish. Something of both insane stupidity and misplaced, chest-thumping machoism. Something I would have quite frankly expected the Welsh Walt character to have done and not one of the professional soliders.

I will not spoil it if you are still interested in this novel, but I will say this. Fire Force, because of that single stupid event, became the first book that I actually put away, unfinished, in a dark corner of my room. I have since moved on to something more realistic. Thank you Duncan Falconer.

I really enjoyed Matt Lynn's first book 'Death Force', so I was really looking forward to the second book in the series. It delivers a 100% and more. The same characters are back from the first book, but this time around they are plunged into a conflict in the African state of Batota. The battle scenes are great, much better than the run-of-the-mill SAS books, and there are some twists and surprises along the way.
This is shaping up into a a brilliant set of thrillers.
I can't wait for the next one.

Have to disagree with the other reviews posted so far, this was not great. I've gone for three stars, but it's the botom end of three stars.
Using the same characters as in Death Force this involves the mercenaries going into Africa with the intention of taking out the guy in charge. Of course there is double crossing, high level action and plenty of gore. Where it fails is that there is action at the expense of a decent plot and there is endless repetition. How many times did I need to hear how beautiful Africa is, how many times did I have to be reminded of the backstory of an individual character? And the weaponry? Endless, endless descriptions.

This is by the numbers writing and sadly, it isn't very good.
