A big improvement ! 31 Jan 2008
Format:Audio CD
This album is one of my favourite K.Joke album.I think the remastering has given the album a firmer feel, the bass & drum's are the most noticeable improvement gaining from a beefed up sound. The one down side is Geordie's guitar's. Apparently he was remastering the guitar's himself because he was so dissapointed with the original. To me it sound's no better which is a shame as I think this is the best guitar album Geordie ever made in K.Joke, still a great album & the bonus track's make it well worth buying. A nice touch is in the sleeve note's on all these new remaster's. Dedicated to the late, great man himself, the lovely Paul Vincent Raven who left us last October. It's a shame that they did'nt make their peace before his death. R.I.P. MR.RAVEN>

This was the Killing Joke record to feature bassist Paul Raven. Whilst not as dischordant as the previous Revelations, Fire Dances has alot of power and intense rhythm. I classify this as the most 'primitive' KJ album, in that the lyrics and music actually sound like they are made by tribal warriors. It captures the joy and exuberance of living life at it's simplest. Songs like The Gathering, Song & Dance and Feast of Blaze shine pure simple emotion. My favourite song on the album is Rejuvenation. The drums hit like thunder, the words speak of tribes forming and taking over the earth. This albums about being grateful for what youve got, and will power!

Fire Dances (1983) is Killing Joke's first foray into more accessible material following their earlier efforts between 1979 and 1982, which had a decidedly limited, if devoted (me included !), audience. Jaz Coleman & Co's obsession with all things occult (a product of their fascination with the works of Alistair Crowley et al) comes to the fore here, entrenched within some fairly upbeat-ish songs (in comparison to KJ's previous outings).

With classic tracks such as Lets All Go (To The Fire Dances) and Feast Of Blaze onboard, Geordie Walker's tight, skillful riffing, Coleman's slightly more restrained vocals and a more fluid rhythm section, a real sea-change in the Joke's approach is apparent, providing a snapshot of greater things to come.

Their next album, Night Time (1985), was a perfect follow-on, with darker lyrics, superb production and songs other bands would die for. Fire Dances is not far off the mark of greatness either, and excellently portrays a band undergoing a major transition.
