FOUR STARS! Romantic Times

On the order of King William II, called Rufus, Alain De Crency goes to Cumbria to seize the castle of the sorcerer Fyren, kill him, and take Fyren's daughter as his bride- no questions asked.

But no siege or battle is necessary, for the castle is merely handed over to him. And inside he finds the evil Fyren dead, his body shrouded in the most magnificent purple cloak Alain has ever seen. Alain takes the cloak for his own, then discovers the intended bride is missing. He wonders, does the girl, as he had asked Rufus, have two heads? And what secrets will he find that Rufus didn't want to tell him?

Tormented by demons and hideous dreams, Melisande cares not whether she lives or dies, yet she fears death far more than dying. She has committed a sin that will never be forgiven, killed her murderous father to protect her people from his predations. But Fyren is said to be the Spawn of Satan, and Melisande has every reason to believe his claims. And once she crosses into the realms of Satan, she knows her father will exact vengeance beyond her worst imagination. The hellish voices that scream inside her head now are nothing compared to what is to come. Yet she knows the Norman priests will burn her for her crimes as well as her demons.

She flees, hoping the Norman lord will be satisfied with just the castle. But Fyren has sealed the fate of the Norman, for the purple cloak she left as Fyren's shroud is now draped over the Norman's shoulders. Only Melisande knows what it will bring. Only she can save the Norman from his fate, and the fate of her people with him. That means she must face death. And Hell. And Fyren.

Hell of a story! 1 Jun 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Poor Melisande has had a hell of a life with her evil father. His wickedness knows no bounds and he has even caused the death of her mother by gifting her with a poisonous cloak. Thank goodness he is now dead. Unfortunately as he gasps his last the Normans are at the gate. Alain De Crency has orders from King William II (Rufus) to take both the castle and the daughter as his wife.

Melisande hides in plain sight as one of the servants, protected by her people. Alain is attracted to the young girl but knows that it is his duty to marry Melisande who seems to have disappeared.. To make matters worse Alain has also taken a fancy to the poisonous cloak and wears it constantly. Whatever she does Melisande is unable to part him from it. She knows he will not believe it toxic and even when he realises her identity and marries her she is unable to tell him. She is haunted by demons which invade her sleep terrifying her. While Alain and his knights battle Saxons endangering the castle to make the area safe for his King who is on his way north, he tries to make sense of his wife.

Delle Jacobs is a new author to me and I really enjoyed this story.

Fire Dance 11 Jun 2011

Quite an intriguing read. Lady Melisande has suffered years of abuse at the hands of her evil father Freyen. When she finally believes her prayers have been answers and he's dead the normans have invaded the castle and it is too late for her to escape, so she hides as a serving girl. Alain finally discoveres who he was sent to marry and weds her that day. Alain finally discovers why his bride wasn't a virgin and the horror she had endured. Add into the equation that her father didn't die and she finally realises that she loves Alain. This book kept me well and truly gripped from start to finish.

This would have been a much better read if the heroine hadn't been keeping a secret for no apparent reason. Alright it would have shortened the story somewhat but there was no need for her not to tell the hero and I found it very irritating! This was obviously an inexperienced author trying to make it suspenseful but failing woefully by keeping the secret going too long as any idiot could see as soon as he knew everything would be resolved, silly.
