At last, a book that covers cheese from every angle - cooking with cheese, what to drink with it, how it's made and beyond. I particularly love, and will find useful, sections on such diverse topics as options for the cheeseboard, festive cheese and even après-ski cheese - every conceivable occasion where you might want to eat cheese is discussed and each one is littered with great wine and beer matching possibilities. Indeed, a whole section is devoted to cheese and drink matching, an often misunderstood concept and one that Fiona covers comprehensively yet in simple terms, offering some obvious matches and other unusual ones.
I tried one of the book's delicious-sounding and gorgeous-looking recipes this week - Saffron Risotto with aged Parmesan and Serrano Ham. It was straightforward to prepare and swiftly disappeared from our plates, accompanied by Fiona's winematching suggestion, Soave, which was spot on.
With a whole host of useful tips including serving temperatures, storing cheese, how to buy it, and even a page on 'Cutting your Cheese Calories', this is a book that will be close to hand and much refered to in my kitchen. At first glance, the range of topics covered may seem overwhelming, but the whole book is very clearly set out into bite-size sections, making it easy to dip in and out of as a reference.
When I showed the book to friends and colleagues, there was much praise of the excellent photography. The cheeses pictured really speak to you and there were mutterings of 'Where did you get that book?' and 'I feel a book purchase coming on'. It's certainly a must-try book for the cheeselover and I'm looking forward to my first cheese and champagne party!
