This version catches Ian Partridge at his best, flowing voice, effortlessly produced, very English in style - exactly what Finzi wanted and expected. The Guildford Phil are not the LSO, but Handley knows what he is doing and obtains fine playing from them. The phrasing, tone colour etc are masterfully done. The recording is good, warm and clear. I have the Langridge / Liverpool recording but this is better. The sound is not quite as good, but perfectly decent still, but Partridge is just more idiomatic an English lyric tenor than Langridge, fine though he is.
The other work is really a filler, fine, but not in the same league of inspiration as the Finzi, which is a masterpiece.
