This is a lovely disc and such good value from ASV with 73 min of playing time. I have known and loved the Finzi clarinet concerto for many years since I first heard it played on the BBC by Janet Hilton. The Stanford was new to me but it's an enjoyable and interesting piece. Stanford completed this work in 1902 and dedicated it to Richard Muhlfeld, whose playing was the inspiration for its composition. It doesn't sound like a 20th century work but rather there are echoes or intimations of Elgar or perhaps Brahms here. The Finzi concerto, written for the Three Choirs Festival at Hereford Cathedral in 1949, is of its time. It sounds modern but is not in any way significantly atonal. Emma Johnson's playing is lovely but, probably because I was brought up on it, I marginally prefer the tone Janet Hilton produces. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Charles Groves provide a rich backing for these works. The disc is rounded off with 5 Bagatelles from Finzi and 3 Intermezzi from Stanford, all for clarinet and piano (Malcolm Martineau). An excellent disc!
