Product Description

Book Description

The first handy guide to Finistere in English. This well-illustrated guide describes 14 tours of the least known department of Brittany. With schematic maps and full directions, it covers the many interesting and unusual sights to be found only just across the channel. Medieval city centres, spectacular coastlines, forested hills, peaceful estuaries - for sight-seeing, relaxation or activity holidays, this area has much to offer. Finistere is rich in history, legend and Breton culture, and this book opens the door to all its varied aspects. Specific themes such as children's activities, sights of archaeological interest, specialist museums, gardens and the famous parish closes are also included. There are over 200 colour photographs.

If I may pick up on the pun in the title of this excellent pocket-sized guide book, this is far from “the End of the World” but the beginning of a tour of discovery of a fascinating part of a great region of France, sticking out into the Atlantic Ocean.

Finistère is an amazing mixture of rugged coastline, with some spectacular sandy beaches, of medieval towns, prehistoric sites, craggy moorland and undulating farmland. Wendy Mewes has successfully selected a number of tours which, by following clearly described routes, introduce the visitor who may not have a lot of time to plan their own trips around this lovely area of Brittany. Even the casual reader will gain an insight into the region from the wide-ranging selection of tours excellently illustrated with colour photographs. Each tinerary is further accompanied by a few comments from the author on her own favourite places ? a useful indication of how well she knows her own ground.

From my own view point, after a couple of years of getting to know Finistère, often using this guidebook as my inspiration, there is only one point on which I might perhaps take issue - I do not find the modern abbey church at Landévennec ‘unremarkable’ [page 84]; it has a tranquillity all of its own, its size contrasting with the [unmissable] ‘backwater’ quaintness of the village of Landévennec itself. Apart from this small point, I find the personal nature of the narrative useful as a guide.

All in all, an excellent quick introduction to an amazing part of Brittany and of France.

Excellent guide 27 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
Totally baffled by the previous reviewer. We've found this book an excellent guide and have discovered things not mentioned in general guidebooks we have to Brittany. It is exactly what it says - 14 circuits for days out in the car, often in fantastic scenery. It says clearly in the introduction that some of the routes are long enough to provide several days of amusement - ideal for those touring, like us on one occasion. The information about places along the way is just enough to give you the context and background needed for enjoying your own personal experience. There's a nice mix of famous places and small gems not so easily found.
The book is clearly laid-out and user-friendly. Each circuit has a list of highlights at the beginning so you can see at once if there are things you fancy. There's a good choice for each day trip, so if you don't like swimming or chapels or walks you can miss them out and find plenty of other things to see. The colour photos are quite small but very enticing - sometimes we have chosen a place to see just on that basis. On the trips followed we've found the maps and directions clear and accurate, and the author's personal comments at the end of each section useful. I recommend this book.

We ordered this book for our daughter who is going to visit Finnistere for the first time.
We have only just read it. We are extremely disappointed, and would not recommend this book to
anybody thinking of visiting Finisterre. There is nothing here that cannot be found in any travel book.
If we had seen it earlier, we would have requested if we could return it.
