From the Back Cover

Cassie Jordan has always been at the beck and call of her demanding family. Used, taken for granted, she decides enough is enough. But her family are not ready to let go. Barbara, her jealous youngest sister, is furious with Cassie and causes a row that tears the family apart. Laura and Aileen, Cassie's lifelong friends, have shared so much. Their first flat together, giddy holidays, the triumphs and disasters of romance. The sadness of bereavements. They are with her all the way. And then there's the enigmatic, sexy David Williams, who touches Cassie's life in a manner that she will never forget as she finds independence and success despite family opposition. Finishing touches is an engrossing story of schoolmates and soulmates, of shared secrets and desires - and how one young woman dared to make her impossible dream come true. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This beautifully written book by Patricia Scanlan shows three best friends as they grow up together. Mainly focused on Cassie it shows as the girls grow up in a small town in Ireland and then move on to the big city where they share a flat together. The book shows the trials and tribulations that they endure together and that friendship can be one of the strongest bonds of all. I particularly liked this book because the girls were ambitious, knew what they wanted and were successful, although still remaining compassionate and caring. This book inspired me to carry on with my education and enroll in extra college courses to better myself and I am thoroughly glad that I read it.

I found this book an excellent read, I couldn't put it down, the way it has been written takes the reader through many different emotions. The book focuses mainly on a girl called Cassie who is taken for granted by her family because she is the eldest and not married. She has to leave her life in Liverpool and come home to look after her mother who becomes very sick. This is a terrific book and if anyone has a family that forgets they exist sometimes or a younger sister that drives you crazy then you will enjoy this book immensely.

This is the first book that I had read by this author. The unique Irish wit shines through and it describes the onset of a particular illness with a lot of passion and undersatnding. This is a feel good read, it had me laughing , crying and thinking very hard about the main character........the author raises lots of situations, most that can be easily related to, as they occur in every day issues in life. Have now gone onto other books by this author and am looking forward to the same kind of stories

This book has to be one of Patricia Scanlan's best. I bought it on the ferry back from France and read it on the coach trip home. It tells the story of Cassie Jordan and her two best friends, Aileen and Laura. It covers topics like coming to terms with Laura's father having an affair and Aileen excaping from a mother who expected her to stay in Port Mahon all her life. Cassie is unlucky in having two extremely selfish younger sisters who seem to see her as the head of the family and expect her to look after their mother when the doctor tells them she has Alzheimer's disease. All Barbara can think is "is it hereditary?" Her sister-in-law, Jean, is just as bad as Barbara and despiten having done nothing for her mother-in-law, expects to receive an equal share of her estate when she dies. Cassie is very unjudgmental and will take care of anyone that needs looking after, as is proved when she is engaged to Robbie. She is very lucky that the wedding never happened and her relationship with the Welsh writer, David Williams, is the one good thing that comes of her returning to Port Mahon to take care of her sick mother.

Patricia Scanlan has been one of my favourites for many years and I've never been disappointed in any of her books. I re-read this one this summer as it was passed to me in a book swap (sailors and water gypsies crave a good book swap) and I loved it as much as the first time. The book is basically about three women (Cassie, Aileen and Laura) who grew up together from schooldays and remained best of friends. Each woman has her own story and the sagas of their families but the main storyline is of Cassie, her family, her career and her loves. It's a beautifully written Irish tale, one you don't really want to end, and by the end you really feel you've had your moneys worth. If you like Maeve Binchy then you'll love Patricia Scanlan, two lovely warm Irish storytellers.
