Product Description

Product Description

Once again knitting is at the forefront of popular crafts and leisure time activities. Today, however, people turn to it not simply as a money-saving activity, but also as an opportunity to exercise their creativity, produce something original to wear or use, and do something relaxing and therapeutic away from the regular stresses and strains of modern life. Most patterns readily available to handknitters give instructions on how to knit the item, but not necessarily how to finish it. But the techniques involved in finishing a garment successfully, from choosing the appropriate methods of casting off to adding in a zipper, take a bit of time to master and achieve instinctively. In awareness of this, this book provides practical advice and step-by-step instructions for every sort of finishing technique. The reader can thus build up a store of effective methods with which to personalize and add flair to their work, whether it's embellishing a child's hat or inserting the right size button-holes for a chunky cardigan. The final section of the book enables you to put the techniques into practice using a few classic design projects to show the limitless potential and versatility of well executed finishing techniques.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful at all levels, 21 Nov 2004
By The scribbler "Anna" (London, England) - See all my reviews
Jane Crowfoot has compliled a very useful book for beginner and advanced knitter alike. Yarn types are well explained and step by step photos feature largely. For me, the book covers things I want to do, explained well some things I didn't know about, and also has several projects for the home and wardrobe. My copy has become much-used, and if you only get one book on this subject this one will serve you well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable, 13 Jun 2005
Ms Crowfoot explains the basics of knitting techniques in a clear, no-nonsense way. Whether you want to learn the basics such as casting on or you'd like to make your garments look more professional with advanced seaming methods, this book is worth its weight in gold.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only one you need - but it comes at a price., 26 Sep 2006
The title of this book is misleading. It is not just about finishing techniques, it has techniques for all aspects/stages of knitting. There are about 6 different ways to cast on, for example. The photographs are exceptionally clear, as are the explanations. There are none of those awful drawings of knitting techniques, which I find much more difficult to follow. There are also some useful knitting patterns at the back. I am an experienced knitter, but always find something new in this book. I was going to buy either this book, or the enormous Vogue book of knitting techniques. After a very long examination of the two (thanks to my local bookshop) I chose this one; I thought it had everything I needed for the time being. However, since originally buying this book, the price has increased from £7 to £10. I don't think it is worth that much. If I was buying a techniques book now, I would get the Vogue one, which currently costs £17: that one really does have EVERYTHING. I thought this one was a cheap buy, and a small format that I could keep by my side whilst I knitted, but the price increase has changed my opinion, and made this a less-worthwhile purchase.
