Make Your Mark

Design is at a turning point. Our infatuation with—and the backlash against—technology is over. Today's best designers have learned to embrace its advantages and think beyond its limitations by combining the power of the computer with the tactile qualities of handmade elements.

Inside you'll find examples of work that showcase a variety of design methods, including mixed media, illustration, letterpress, screenprinting and collage. You'll find inspiration in examples from outstanding designers and see how traditional elements can make a more powerful statement than anesthetized computer-only work. Fingerprint also includes insightful essays on the power of the handmade by Debbie Millman, Jean Orlebeke, Jim Sherraden, Martin Venezky and Ross Macdonald.

The projects in this book are beautiful, technical, simple, layered and powerful. Each project communicates its intended message with eloquence.

You can be part of this exciting design revolution. Leave your own fingerprint on the world by exploring the fusion of the digital with the hand-wrought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring eye-candy 17 Jan 2008
Format:Hardcover
This book is like a breath of fresh air. It's nice to see a return to the basics, after all the slick, glossy, perfect computer-generated art and designwork we see everyday all around us. Fingerprint showcases graphic designers who use old-fashioned methods of printing and design for their creations - letterpress, stamping, embossing, screenprinting, origami, hand-lettering, recycling materials etc.

An excellent resource book for graphic designers and artists alike, eye candy for the casual observer. The objects showcased range from CD and record covers to skateboards, handmade greeting cards, posters, business cards, portfolios, wedding invitations, handmade journals, handbound books, magazines, etc etc!

My only gripe is that it's American; perhaps Chen Design Associates' next endeavour could encompass the wealth of design talent in Europe and Asia as well?

5.0 out of 5 stars Handmade is great 28 Jan 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book is a must for all who like their graphics with a handmade edge. A great book for ideas, there are some beautiful, edgy and clever designs in here. A book that graphic designers need to see.

5.0 out of 5 stars fingerprint finger licking inspiring book 12 Feb 2010
Format:Hardcover
A beautifully produced book, showing a great diversity of styles and approaches to hand drawn design.
A great collection to browse and get inspired by. Images that show the glue and the scissors and
the brush marks. Letterpress and hand written words are alive and well. The visual richness of the many
materials used is wonderful and the comments accompanying each work are just enough to explain it.It is not a "how to
book"by any means. As a resource though, I'm sure it will be a joy to have around. I love this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Eye-candy, but not much more 17 Jan 2010
By Szymon
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The authors are explaining the design ideas in a very generic fashion, providing just a short background note for each of the projects. I was disappointed by the lack of explainations of how all these brilliant graphics were made, and what exact techniques were used to create them.

To sum up, while inspiring, this book clearly lacks substantial information.
