Biography

THE RESIDENTS

Over the course of an artistic career spanning several decades, The Residents have remained a riddle of Sphinx-like proportions; cloaking their lives and music in a haze of willful obscurity, the group's members never identified themselves by name, always appearing in public in disguise (in the old days... tuxedos, top hats and giant eyeball masks) and refusing to grant ... Product Description

Recorded in 1976, Fingerprince is The Resident's fourth album. However, when it was being recorded it was not called Fingerprince. In 1976 it was called Tourniquet of Roses and was so long that it would have consumed three LP sides. The album was cut back to the standard length of two sides, which was renamed Fingerprince. Thanks to the length of CD, the original Tourniquet of Roses was restored. The title Fingerprince is still in use for the longer version however. Vinyl version includes digital download card featuring everything on the CD version!.

If the Residents' rather daunting catalogue is unknown to you, then I heartily recommend this album. It summarises all the major aspects of their work in a handy package, although this is as much by accident as by design; the album was transitional for the group and covered many of the bases they would later return to. Their musical and sonic invention is near baffling to the newcomer, but a listen or two sees the strangeness wear off and a world populated odd characters, disillusioned gods and deceased cattle, along with a sonic history of the birth of humanity is brought to eeriely vivid life. A superb album by a legendary band.

This is a remaster of the version released on CD by Torso in the 'eighties. It combines the original Fingerprince album with the additional tracks that were apparently to be included on a third side, This complete release was to be called Tourniquet Of Roses. The decision to cut the album down a single record resulted in the other songs being made available as the EP Babyfingers. The inclusion of those tracks here changes the original album sequence, with their placement in the middle of the playing order. As with all the recent releases of the early albums, on both Mute and MVD, the mastering is excellent. This is the most revealing, however. The Torso CD release was faithful to the Ralph vinyl in that the album sounded as if it had been recorded in a Louisiana swamp. The new version is so different, with both the vocals and individual instruments being much clearer, that it suggests that it has been remixed. Recommended for the inclusion of the bonus tracks, the opportunity to hear the music hidden on the original mix and for the use of the original sleeve design, though the reproduction of the texture is less successful. It would have been a bonus if the unused Tourniquet Of Roses sleeve design had been pictured inside.

A superb slice of insanity from The Residents. You get the vinyl LP as originally issued PLUS an MP3 download of the full set of recordings including tracks only made available recently on CD re-issues. This is probably The Residents album that best represents them. Buy! Buy! Buy!
