I was recently hospitalized due to extreme shortness of breath which my GP correctly suspected was due to lung embolism. The only certain clinical sign of this (until confirmed by CT scan) was the oximeter reading (also confirmed by blood gas analyses). After excellent treatment at the hospital I bought this oximeter myself to be able to check the performance of my lungs.
This is one of the simplest oximeters made by Contec that specialises in this kind of medical equipment, but it fulfills my requirements. It shows the oxygen saturation of the blood, the pulse rate and even a small bar graph showing the strength of the individual pulses. It is very easy to use and fast (about 5 sec for the first reading). I even carry it with me in the supplied pouch when running. As indicated in the manual you have to stand still to get a stable reading. As far as I can check it is very accurate. It does not work on rechargeable batteries - it needs 3 V. But a set of batteries last a very long time - about 10000 readings figuring 15 seconds per reading.
I showed the oximeter to my GP and he is buying one to carry with him on house calls.

This was purchased to monitor the oxygen levels for someone permanently on oxygen. They are really easy to use. The instructions have been translated - so enjoy the language used. We managed to test it against the ones used by the staff in the hospital - turned out to be quite accurate on the Sp02 value (+1). These clever devices shine a "light" through your finger and measure the absorption - so anything on your nail (e.g. nail varnish) will cause them problems.
