Review

'... the books are very appealing. The children loved feeling the letters and each book ended with an appropriate activity to consolidate what had been learned.' -- Teacher's comments, Right Start, June/July 1994

'Each of the seven colourful books features a selection of the 40-plus sounds which are found in the middle or end of a word - e.g. the combination 'oa'. Your child is encouraged to make an action for each illustrated sound while saying it. Sandy Chapman, a primary school teacher with three daughters, reviewed the books. She said, "My daughter Sarah, who is four, really enjoyed them. The idea of running your finger along the letters is excellent for teaching writing.' -- Parents, March 1994

'The action and sound in the Finger Phonics books is very clever and caught Emily's imagination ... the books are attractive and sturdy enough to keep coming back to.' -- Parent's comments, Right Start, June/July 1994

From the Back Cover

The Finger Phonics books give an excellent start to both reading and writing

The books show all the letter sounds of English, not just the alphabet, with an 'action' for each. There are cut-out letter shapes to show little fingers the correct way to form each letter and at the end of each book are 'finger activities' so that knowing the letters leads easily to both reading and spelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Learning Books!! 3 Aug 2005
Format:Board book
I am a big fan of these books. The series comes in a set of 7 books each with a small selection of different letters from the alphabet to learn. There are simple activities to do at the end of each book to round up what you have learnt. There are also cut out letter shapes to show little fingers the correct way to form each letter.
My 4 year old son has got on so well with these I was amazed. The actions that go with the sounds the letters make, (eg. pretend to puff out candles and say p,p,p,p. and Hold hand in front of mouth panting as if you are out of breath and say h,h,h,h.) turn this into a fun and memorable way of learning.
My son will be prepared for reading and spelling at school now and it's thanks to these books that he wants to learn. I would thoroughly recommend them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for your pre-schooler and beyond 2 April 2008
Format:Board book
I would happily recommend this set of books for even the youngest of children.

They are lovely and sturdy, with inset letter(s) on each page for your child to put their finger in and trace the shape, but most importantly they don't seem like an "educational" book to children! Even without focusing on the phonics element to the books, the pages are great fun to look at just for the pictures - there are recurring characters (eg a snake) which can be searched for on each page, and 2-4 pages at the rear of each book with exercises such as matching games, some with flaps to lift, which re-inforce the sounds covered in that book.

Because of these elements, my little girl (then aged 2) enjoyed looking at them just as much as my 4 year old son, who'd just started in reception class at school when I bought these 6 months ago to supplement his learning to read. My only wish is that I had bought them 2 years before when he was a pre-schooler, as it would have introduced the jolly phonics concepts that he is now learning at an earlier age.

Highly recommended to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun way to get a child started on reading 26 Feb 2010
Format:Board book
When my 3 yr old expressed an obvious interest in learning to read like his older brother I got these books thinking that he could use the ones with individual letters and my older son my benefit from the diagraph books. They use Jolly Phonics alongside the Oxford Reading Tree at school. However my youngest son sped through all 7 books in a couple of weeks then started at the beginning again! He loves them. He likes the pictures, the way you can trace the letter with your finger, and the quizzes at the end. He will often ask for them as a bed time story. Through these books he has learnt all his letters and fair number of diagraphs which they don't start until reception at our school.

If your child is interested in letters and you want to help him/her learn in a fun way then these are great books that give a good foundation to reading. If your child is not interested (as my oldest wasn't at 3) then wait until they are before you buy or else they will end up sitting on the shelf!

I have actually discovered they are very good for my 20mnth child too! She likes the tactile letters and wants to know the names of all the things in the pictures! Being board books they are robust enough for her too!
