Product Description

Product Description

When asked about the greatest difficulty of being Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan famously replied "events, dear boy, events." Kevin Jeffery's book is about the key events in British politics since the Second World War, how those moments influenced the years that followed them and what Britain might have been like had they not occurred. "Finest and Darkest Hours" ranges from Winston Churchill's accession to the premiership in 1940 through to the emergence of New Labour in 1994 - via the Suez fiasco, the Profumo affair, the three-day week, the winter of discontent, the Falklands war and Black Wednesday - to identify precisely just how significant these episodes really were.

5.0 out of 5 stars Many of the things you should know more about in one book., 2 July 2004
This review is from: Finest and Darkest Hours: The Decisive Events in British Politics, from Churchhill to Blair (Paperback)
I am very much interested in politics, history and current affairs but am too young, in my late 20s, to remember many of the seminal events in British history since WWII. This book provided me with an excellent account of issues like the Suez crisis and the winter of discontent, many of which still have an impact on thinking and decision making today. Unsure about what 'black Wednesday' or the 'Profumo affair' were really all about? Here's your chance to find out
The author's style is very engaging and the topics are covered in sufficient detail to present a comprehensive overview without getting bogged down in superfluous minutia.
Highly recommended.
