Biography

Composer, guitarist, singer, and bandleader Frank Zappa was a singular musical figure during a performing and recording career that lasted from the 1960s to the '90s. His disparate influences included doo wop music and avant-garde classical music; although he led groups that could be called rock & roll bands for much of his career, he used them to create a hybrid style that bordered on ... This latest offering from the UMRK vault was apparently put together by Zappa in 1972 with a view to release as a double LP. It seems designed to showcase a mixture of extended jamming and soloing with shorter "novelty" items.

The contents mostly consist of live recordings of the 10-piece 1969 line-up of The Mothers Of Invention that briefly included trumpeter Buzz Gardner and guitarist Lowell George, plus a couple of further live tracks from 1971 (one nearly 20 minutes long) by the Flo & Eddie line-up of the Mothers - although neither feature any of Flo & Eddie's vocals. The second disc begins with a number of studio oddities. The sound quality is good to excellent throughout.

The first three tracks come from a performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 6 June 1969. Sleazette is a rather fine guitar solo. Mozart Piano Sonata in Bb is just that - parts of the piece in question played - completely straight - by Ian Underwood while various apparently amusing acts and silly noises go on around him on the stage. I say apparently amusing because there is much laughter from the audience, however it isn't significantly amusing if you can't see what's going on and its presence here seems pointless - you had to be there. The Walking Zombie Music is a weird little interlude with some (found?) commentary and also, from the sound of the audience, some more amusing visuals. It's quite interesting but not particularly satisfying.

As the title says, Frank himself put this set together in the early 70s, almost like an early attempt at a 'You CAN Do That On Stage' entry! And you can tell, it's put together with an expert touch.

For some reason it was never released, but it's prime live Mothers for most of the album, with 2 lengthy pieces ending each disc. Only gripe is an overly long Mozart piano 'ballet' piece, which is fun if you were there, but is a bit lost in translation to audio.. still fun though.

Highly recommended.

This is essentially a compilation of fine instrumental music from Zappa's Mothers of Invention of the late Sixties and Mothers of the early Seventies. A few brief moments of comic relief prove rather tedious in the long run - such as the "zany Mozart ballet" - but there's enough engaging musical meat here to forgive Uncle Frank for his indulgences. Most of these "Finer Moments" are just that. If you like Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Uncle Meat and YCDTOSA 5, disc 1 - you'll love this.

Some of the posthumous releases from FZ have been worth getting, but I am afraid there is way to much "filler" on this double. Imagine a pantomine soundtrack recording. So much is lost without the visuals. As a previous reviewer says, there is some good stuff on here, just not much that bears repeated listens. The 8 minute plus percussion fiddling/drum solo/ rattling tin cans section on side 2 is unlistenable to.
This might have made a reasonable single cd ( though not a long one) and I could see why in the cold light of day, FZ decided against releasing it. There is not enough music or etertainment here to fill a double or stand as a good example of FZ album

Live material from the original Mothers of Invention. Funny tracks are maybe funny for one or two listens. The longer tracks contain also great music.

A sign of how far advanced these early incarnations of the Mothers really were. The CD is let down a little by featuring recordings that have appeared on other live albums - the MOI You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore disc - but there is plenty to enjoy from the bands up until (roughly) to Just Another Band from LA.
Not a classic but still very interesting...

Good to see the Zappa estate is keeping the family bank account healthy. Clocking in at just over 80 minutes the music's on 2 cd's. If the Intro or the daft ballet had been left off it would easily have filled a single cd. Or is the Zappa music vault so sparse they couldn't muster 2 hours worth?

This is a must. A great period in Frank's musical journey. 2 discs worth of magic. No other modern day genius could keep putting out stuff from such a long time back and still be reelin em in. Creative genius is an understatement. I only wish he was still with us. Buy this masterclass work now and with a little luck the Zappa family trust will give us more very soon. The legend lives on! As it is written "those who get it, get it. Those who don't weren't meant too" miss you Uncle Frank! Xxxxxxxxxxxcxxcxxcc moowaaaaahh! Xxxxxxx
