This book is the shocking debut novel of Simon Beckett. It is a story of sexual obsession and deviant pleasures. A middle aged art dealer becomes obsessed with his young female assistant, so much so that he schemes the perfect plan to make his fantasies become real. No matter the cost. The novel is written in the first person, the narrator being the obsessive art dealer, which was so realistically done that i found myself symphatising with the guy. Excellent and simple dialogue that makes the book very enjoyable and scarily realistic as well. My only complaint is that the book is too short and maybe the author could have dwelled much more on the art dealer s childhood instead of a few dream flashes. It s a pity this book is out of print, cause i cannot recommend it enough.

Excellent service and delivery of this fine book, which has been very difficult to acquire in the UK, as it is no longer in print. The author, Simon Beckett, has become one of my favourites in my avid fascination for crime novels, ranking alongside Michael Connelly and John Lescroart on my ever-bowing book shelves (which should receive some respite now that I have a Kindle!) I was keen to add Simon Beckett's first novel to my collection, but this one is pretty wierd and quite different from his more recent works. The characters are quite life-like, although in keeping with the plot, they are not necessarily likeable. However, as I read on I found myself casting eminent actors into the roles, as the story entirely lends itself to the makings of a good, creepy TV drama! I'm pleased that it has completed my Simon Beckett compilation to date, but I'm not sure whether more recent readers of Simon Beckett's more clever and complicated plots would find it anywhere near as gripping.

Didn't like it, didn't finish it 12 Dec 2004

The characters are trite, the main character boring and without any redeeming value, and the story slogged along without excitement. I read about 100 pages, then the last chapter, and that was enough for me. Perhaps somebody else will find it interesting, or think it has psychological intrique; I found it unreadable.
