Product Description

BBC Review

Continent spanning perfectionist quintet Red Light Company finally decide the time is prime to display their unashamedly populist debut wares.

Red Light Company are a stadium band in waiting. Their single Meccano is already linked with the terraces courtesy of Football Focus, and its companion tracks on Fine Fascination lend themselves to nothing if not a big crowd and the open sky.

Formed from an ad less than two years ago - an ad that was evidently so appealing that it drew bassist Shawn away from his native Wyoming via a protracted visa problem - the band are a truly eclectic bunch with roots in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Scotland, Wales and, less exotically, commuter belt Maidenhead.

Their lack of shared history compensated for by an extensive and deliberately instigated period of rehearsals during which they made no live appearances, the band finally launched themselves with the tellingly polished single With Lights Out. Meccano followed, but it was the anthemic indie of Scheme Eugene, with its emphatic singalong chorus, "what you don't have, you won't miss it when you're gone", that really pricked the ears of those outside the realms of new bands list compilers and industry scenesters.

Mainstream commercial success is surely only a matter of time: fourth single Arts and Crafts is keys-heavy and just inventive enough in its chorus to catch the attention and stick. When Everyone Is Everybody Else seems to mix the emotive elements of Coldplay's Yellow and Blur's The Universal, while The Alamo is cleverly descriptive in its galloping pace.

Already lightly blessed by good time associations, this album is primed and ready to go down for prosperity as the soundtrack of many people's 2009. --Keira Burgess

Tragically discovered this album in asda a couple of weeks ago. Had no idea who Red Light Company were but extremely suspicious, mainly based on view that asda would only stock if it was some feeble pop album and that they they had a rubbish name. Returned to shelf...

A couple of days later trawling through on demand videos on Virgin and came across Scheme Eugene, which I only selected because I have a friend called Eugene. The track, with its utterly ridiculously catchy hook, blew me away. Had a vague feeling I'd heard of this band before, but where? Another trip to asda, the album still there and having checked out a few other songs which showed promise I decided to buy. A decision I don't anticipate regretting.

The first track, Words of Spectacular, brings to mind The Darkness, but in a good way if that's possible. Actually it works despite sounding a wee bit like The Darkness. Elsewhere there's the vocal sneer of Brett Anderson resonating throughout. What gets me is that this album is drenched in hooks, riffs and tunes galore- this band are ready made for the big arenas and will go down a storm at Festivals, with the result that this will be one of the biggest (and best) albums of this year.

Have this on my mp3 player and was somewhat disappointed to be offered a lift home from work when all I really wanted to do was listen to Fine Fascination on the way home on the train. It really is that good.

A complete joy, unashamedly recommended, by an old fuddy duddy.

Fine Fascination (Limited 5 Track Bonus Edition)
I've had this playing in the car for ages. Scheme Eugene a favourite. Big anthemic sounds, saw them live at Latitude - totally lived up to expectations.

Fascinately Fine 24 July 2009

Great album, similar in style to MGMT with electro-pop melodies. The band offer a lot of early promise. It tails off towards the end but the first 5 songs will stand up against anything other major artists currently have to offer.
