Book Description

21 Jun 2012
The only woman to serve as a soldier in the First World War, the Englishwoman Flora Sandes became a hero and media sensation when she fought for the Serbian Army and pursued a distinguished career in its ranks as officer. This account charts her incredible story, from her tomboyish childhood in genteel Victorian England, her mission to Serbia as a Red Cross volunteer and subsequent military enrolment, her celebrity lecture tours of Europe, her marriage to a fellow officer and her survival of a Gestapo prison during the Second World War to her final years in Suffolk. A fascinating character of her times and an inspiration to women the world over, Flora Sandes is brought to life and restored to her rightful place in history by this authorized biography - compiled with the help of her family, and using hitherto unused private papers and photographs.

Review

'Meticulous biography... Sandes did not fight for ideology, but for excitement and camaraderie.' --Ben Macintyre, The Times

'Miller s prose is clear, and she writes with passion about her subject, injecting a Saturday morning picture-house feel to Flora's exploits on the Serbian front line. It is this that makes the book a bracing narrative, appealing to the general reader... endnotes, and a thorough bibliography of primary and secondary sources, also give the book academic substance.' --The Scotsman

'This is an inspiring story, meticulously researched and referenced, of courageous women whose presence made a difference to an embattled and courageous country.' --The Scots Magazine

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly remarkable 20 Aug 2012
Format:Hardcover
Just finished reading the book today. I never heard of Flora Sandes before. I saw the book in my local library and it caught my eye. I couldn't stop reading it. A remarkable story about a remarkable woman, a true heroine and a very brave woman who was way before her time. And also the touching and little known story of the suffering endured by the Serbian people whom Flora loved so much.
A must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars So welcome and so long overdue 17 Aug 2012
Format:Hardcover
The story of English nurse Flora Sandes is one that is little known and deserves to be told. Joining the Serbian army during WWI after volunteering to serve as a nurse caring for the wounded, she was the only British woman combat soldier of the Great War. For so many years only very rare copies of her own two-part autobiography and a 1963 biography "The Lovely Sergeant" were the only publications that were sparsely available to tell her compelling story. This new book is such a welcome addition to this relatively obscure story of a true heroine of the First World War. If you don't know who Flora Sandes was, my advice is to get this book and find out. You won't regret it.
