If you care about your voice but are afraid of doctors... 9 Jun 2010
By ClaireF - Published on Amazon.com
I picked up Finding Your Voice at an event in Toronto at the Canadian Opera Company. I am a classically-trained singer and I am leery of traditional medicine. The book piqued my interest simply because of its subtitle: `A Voice Doctor's Holistic Guide.' I have found the book to be an invaluable resource and unlike anything else I've seen in bookstores. There is something very powerful about a book that makes you feel like YOU are in control instead of feeling like your voice is something that only specialists/voice coaches/etc. understand. I particularly like the way Eastern practices are tied into taking control. (Perhaps because I already know a fair bit about Buddhism and Chakras, I found it quite easy to see the connection that the author makes between one's voice and the body's seven energy systems.) However, it's so well laid out, I do think people unfamiliar with Eastern thought will appreciate this too. Well-worth purchasing for those who are afraid of doctors but care about their voice.
A Great "Find" 16 Jun 2010
By L. Rizzo - Published on Amazon.com
I bought this book without knowing anything about it except what was in the product description. My job in a school involves a lot of speaking, and my voice was getting strained to the point that it was painful to talk with any volume. I didn't want to go the traditional doctor route and wind up having to take medication. Luckily, I found this book! It's nicely laid-out, easy to understand and was extremely helpfulful to me. I have a better understanding of how important something like proper breathing is. There are also a variety of exercises and tips which have helped me use my voice more effectively and removed the strain I was putting on myself. It's a really great resource to keep on hand. Definitely one of my favorite finds on Amazon.
