This book was not designed simply to be read, but to be worked at! The authors' suggested exercises encourage you to explore different design exercies; some of which you will find easy, some difficult, some boring etc. However until you try them for yourself you won't know which ones will help..... and it is often the ones you least want to do that bring the greatest benefits (I speak from experience). While both of the authors are textile artists, the exercises would translate well to other art forms and as you will probably already own most of the necessary materials, this has to be one of the cheapest design classes you will ever find .... as long as you are prepared to invest a bit of time!

A book designed to make you think laterally, stretch you, come up with some wonderful new design processes and produce some great work whilst enjoying yourself. Dip in or work straight through it you'll learn - I have. It has the added value of being very nicely presented.

A truly wonderful resource for any visual artist seeking to develop their own individual style, this stimulating and thought provoking book offers encouragement and support for every step of the journey.

Clearly written and very accessible the book works on many levels. Beautiful photographs and illustrations complement the text throughout.

Practical visual and written exercises support both the design process and continuous analysis of the work. The sheer variety of exercises, the clear explanation of design principles and tools and the many questions posed combine to form a comprehensive guide to developing original work from conception to completion.

The case studies provide valuable insight into ways of thinking and working and decision making processes. The essays demonstrate the application of exercises and concepts detailed in the book by professional artists as part of their practice - a marvellous section.

Encouraging a positive approach, an open mind and a sense of curiosity this is a book to revisit time and time again for inspiration and guidance.

Unreservedly recommended.
