Product Description

Tom Harpur shows how ancient wisdoms, together with exciting new scientific findings, are combining to show why mere coping techniques are not enough for meeting the stress crisis. Divorced from their spiritual underpinnings and/or religious understanding, such techniques lack the potency which they originally had. Central to a spiritual response to stress is the practice of spiritual meditation in its various forms. While many within traditional Christianity still view meditation with suspicion, Harpur shows it to be one of the lost jewels of a historic treasury of Christian gifts designed for healing. More than that, it is a revitalising gift, which the church can reclaim for its own sake, and offer the outside church who are seeking identity, meaning and purpose.

About the Author

Tom Harpur, columnist for The Toronto Star, Rhodes scholar and Anglican priest, is a prominent writer on religious and ethical issues. He is the author of seven best-selling books. He has hosted numerous radio and television programs, including Life After Death, a ten-part series based on his best-selling book of the same name, and a six-part television series based on his best-seller 'The Uncommon Touch: An Investigation of Spiritual Healing'.

Inspiring work 19 Dec 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I just finished reading Tom Harpur's new book, Finding The Still Point. This publication is the latest in a long list of articles, columns, lectures and books by Tom Harpur which have informed and challenged readers regarding religion, ethics and spirituality over many years. Tom Harpur's gift for presenting deep, complex and significant issues in understandable and
inviting ways continues to be evident in this book.

Finding The Still Point identifies stress as the major issue currently facing all people throughout the world. No one is immune from the pressures of a world moving, changing and communicating faster than human beings can adjust their understandings and responses. Tom Harpur identifies the causes of stress in a scholarly, yet "reader friendly" way. He identifies the range of responses for dealing with stress and concludes that faith and spiritual development are absolutely essential in dealing with modern day pressures.

Finding The Still Point is an inspiring work that looks at many old issues in new ways and applies old teachings to new realities. This book speaks to people of all faiths in a way that transcends denominational religion. One's spiritual development and faith journey can only be strengthened by pondering the challenging issues raised in this text. The book makes a very strong case for an improved world through a realization that all religions share the same core values and aspirations. These common truths should be reinforced to unify rather than divide various local and world factions.

Finding The Still Point contains teachings which, if properly pursued, can positively transform individuals and societal institutions (secular and spiritual) and move each to higher levels of performance . These teachings require each of us to slow down, develop self care strategies and to listen. It is only then that we can find our individual "still point", a point of
wholeness where we can discover the divinity within and reap rich rewards of a new level of mind-body-spirit connectedness.

Spirituality exists within each of us at various levels of development and can be nurtured for further growth. Spirituality transcends specific faiths and religious denominations. My spiritual journey is nurtured by my Christian faith (Presbyterian denomination) and will be significantly enriched as I ponder, question, accept and reject the myriad of issues and strategies
contained in Finding The Still Point R. N. (Bert) Chalmers

Excellent read! Inspiring, relevant causing one to re-think spirituality as most of us were taught. Great book to start your journey to finding the stillness most of us so desperately need in the fast paced world we live in.
