"This groundbreaking selection of autobiographies gives loud and celebratory voice to the frequently hidden and ignored community of those with diverse sex and gender expression. An important and long overdue publication that is sure to illuminate and inform people of all genders who enter the realm of its pages."
— Elizabeth Riley, general manager, Gender Centre, Sydney, Australia

"If you ever doubted that transgender and transsexual issues cross national and cultural boundaries, this provocative collection of voices ought to be enlightening. The confidence, self–awareness, creativity, playfulness, and commitment to life that these people share in the face of invalidation, restriction, oppression, and even violence is absolutely inspiring. The personal is political; these voices raised in harmony prove it."— Jamison Green, educator and author, Becoming a Visible Man

Format:Paperback
A thoughtfully collected series of autobiographies from people who sit outside the basic gender binary. Intelligent; well balanced; moving: this book is an essential read for people exploring their own gendered identity as well as clinicians unfamiliar with transgender issues. In unpicking and deconstructing the basic heteronormative assumptions, this book will no doubt help to create the new discourses that are needed to move transgender into the main stream in the way that lesbian and gay issues had to in say the 1970's. Absolutely worth reading.

A beautifully chosen collection of life stories from individuals who do not fit the binary-gender norm. Unique in that it does not seek to take a certain direction or make a particular point. Rather the lives of these people stand alone, and the reader is left to be challenged and inspired as they will. This book made me rejoice again in the wonderful diversity, complexity and beauty of people in the world!

Intermediate Bought A Primer... 14 Jan 2007
By Aurora V. Adams - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I'm a bit ahead of the game, and so this book, while interesting, really didn't give me what I needed. I was hoping to get a more crystalized understanding of my gender dysphoria / gender identity disorder, but because the material was subjective, from a layman's perspective, and allegorical I really didn't find what I was needing. The book was an uplifting read that more and more individuals of the younger generations are now finding the courage, that it took me until age forty to find, to be the people they know they were born to be. If you want an in depth understanding of gender dysphoria I highly recommend "True Selves" (Brown & Rounsley, 1996) also available from Amazon.com

Finding the Real Me 6 July 2008

Watch out people! I ordered the book. When it arrived it "appeared" to be what I ordered. Instead, it had the correct cover enclosing a different book. I sent it back and asked for a replacement. Again, I got a different book with the correct cover. I was advised by an Amazon support person to send it back and get it somewhere else. I did send it back. I have not read it and can give no opinion on the book. Just the service.
