A very engaging book. Kelly manages to blend a personal and often touching story from his grandmother's childhood, tracking her wartime journey from eastern Poland to Kazakhstan, Iran and India to Britain, with the historical backdrop of these events. The history illuminates the personal; the family story is often told through correspondence which magically survived to this day. While Poland suffered greatly at the hands of the Germans, the book traces the less familiar fate of those taken east - on a journey that started with mass deportation of Poles to Siberia/Russia/Kazakhstan in 1941. FINDING POLAND gives you the historical context to enrich the standard wartime narrative and explain how many Poles found themselves living all across the globe. A compelling read.

This book gives a wonderful insight into a little-known episode of the Second World War - the forced migration of thousands of Poles living in the borderlands of the Soviet Union in the aftermath of Soviet occupation. It weaves together scholarship and family history providing what feels like a very privileged insight into one family's personal experience. It interprets this experience within the context of much larger processes of historical change taking place in eastern Europe at the time. It is a rich account too of the construction of Polish identity - and a reminder of the long and varied history of Polish migration to the UK. Highly recommended!

I personally had no idea that so many Polish people faced these incredible deportations and journeys during the Second World War. This book brilliantly describes the story of just one family (the author's own), the knock on the door in the middle of the night, the increasingly far-flung locations, filled with family photos, letters and memories. But also explains clearly the politics and history behind the one family's story. I was gripped.
