A very engaging book. Kelly manages to blend a personal and often touching story from his grandmother's childhood, tracking her wartime journey from eastern Poland to Kazakhstan, Iran and India to Britain, with the historical backdrop of these events. The history illuminates the personal; the family story is often told through correspondence which magically survived to this day. While Poland suffered greatly at the hands of the Germans, the book traces the less familiar fate of those taken east - on a journey that started with mass deportation of Poles to Siberia/Russia/Kazakhstan in 1941. FINDING POLAND gives you the historical context to enrich the standard wartime narrative and explain how many Poles found themselves living all across the globe. A compelling read.
