Review

‘A must have for anyone wanting to get deeper into the art of outdoor photography. Stunning images and insightful text.’ (Editor’s choice) (Outdoor Photography )

‘Their answers are thoughtful and the advice practical. What’s more, their pictures are beautiful examples of what you can accomplish with a little thought.’ (Jeff Meyer Amateur Photographer )

Product Description

Finding the Picture, the latest in Argentum’s Masterclass series, tackles more of the fundamental questions of creative photography that were left uncovered by its predecessors, Developing Vision and Style and Working the Light. In Finding the Picture, Phil Maplas and Clive Minnitt deal with two of the most fundamental questions in Location Photography – ‘What should I photograph?’ and ‘How should I tackle it?’ These may seem obvious questions but many photographers, no matter how experienced, can suffer the photographic equivalent of writer’s block: they either lack the inspiration for a subject or are unable to see how to capture their chosen subject successfully. As a remedy to this, the authors offer clear and practical advice on the steps photographers can take to release their creativity and find and take a successful image. They tackle a wide range of themes including photographic styles, sources of inspiration, seeing versus looking, simplifying photographs and experimentation. Finding the Picture is rich with tips and suggestions based on the authors’ many years of experience -both as location photographers and as course leaders. Helping to demonstrate the points made, a selection of Clive and Phil’s images are printed as well -accompanied by detailed captions and critiques of each other’s work. As with other titles in the series, this book gives readers the sense of taking part in a location workshop with the authors, but in a form that can be used as a constant source of reference and ideas for freeing up the imagination and ‘finding the picture’. Inspiring 26 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
This is the third in the series from the Light and Land people and, in my view, the best of the three by a long way. It deals with what I find the most difficult aspect of photography: seeing something to photograph. This is not a simple "how to" book, but it does give you a framework for approaching the business of seeing rather than just looking. It illustrates this with many inspirational photographs all with detailed and sometimes witty notes on how the shots were taken.

Refreshingly, the two photographers who wrote the book often used cameras that ordinary people like me use (compacts and DSLRs) so it makes you believe that you too can aspire to take shots like these. By comparison, the first book in the series Working The Light: Landscape Photography Masterclass, most of the images were taken with medium format or full frame film cameras. I don't know anyone who uses that type of equipment so the book was harder to relate to.

Taught me a lot. 26 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
I enjoyed the format of this book - a bit of info, then a couple of photos with detailed descriptions of how they were made. Easy to dip into, and gave some inspiration too. The ideas were largely simple yet effective. I would have liked to see some photos from the "On location" sections too.

Finding the Picture 2 April 2010
By Steve W
Format:Paperback
Having had Clive Minnitt visit and speak at our camera club I was interested in this book. It gives lots of hints and advice. It is well written and does exactly "as it says on the tin".
