Finding Nemo

A delightful undersea world unfolds in Pixar's animated adventure Finding Nemo. When his son Nemo is captured by a scuba diver, a nervous clownfish named Marlin (voiced by Albert Brooks) sets off into the vast--and astonishingly detailed--ocean to find him. Along the way he hooks up with a scatterbrained blue tang fish named Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), who's both a help and a hindrance, sometimes at the same time. Faced with sharks, deep-sea anglers, fields of poisonous jellyfish, sea turtles, pelicans and much more, Marlin rises above his neuroses in this wonderfully funny and thrilling ride--rarely do more than 10 minutes pass without a sequence appearing that's destined to become a theme-park attraction. Pixar continues its run of impeccable artistic and economic successes (Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Monsters, Inc). Supporting voices here include Willem Dafoe, Geoffrey Rush and Allison Janney. --Bret Fetzer

The Wild

A cuddly koala who wants to be fierce, a squirrel in love with a sarcastic giraffe, an addle-pated anaconda, and a lion with a secret set off from their cozy zoo to rescue the lion's adolescent cub from an accidental kidnapping. After braving the dangers of the big city and stealing a boat, they find themselves in the African jungle, where a renegade herd of wildebeest have decided they want to change their position on the food chain (understandable, really). The Wild is hodgepodge--it's never clear why these mismatched creatures are friends and plot elements seem haphazardly plucked from Finding Nemo, Madagascar, and Ice Age: The Meltdown (though the latter two were made at the same time as The Wild, so it's just unfortunate for this movie that they came out first). Despite a general air of manic desperation, The Wild does have its strengths: The animation is richly realistic, leading to some gorgeous depictions of light (not exactly a selling point for kids, but adults can appreciate it). Several characters pop out--a pair of sewer crocodiles; William Shatner (Star Trek, Boston Legal) is effectively scary as the cult-leader/choreographer of the wildebeest; and comedian Eddie Izzard lends some of his trademark smart and silly humor to Nigel, the disgruntled koala bear. Successful bits and pieces don't make for a great movie, but they keep The Wild from the brink of disaster. --Bret Fetzer

Synopsis

Includes the two computer-animated animal adventures, Finding Nemo and The Wild.

Finding Nemo follows Marlin, an overprotective clownfish father, as he desperately searches the sea for his missing son, Nemo. Marlin's journey leads him beyond the Great Barrier Reef into deeper and darker waters, where he meets Dory, a forgetful yet optimistic blue Tang. Meanwhile, little Nemo finds himself in a dentist's fish tank in Sydney, Australia, along with other underwater captives. As Nemo works with his new friends on a plan to escape their tank, Marlin and Dory swim closer, but they'll need more than just fins to get into the dentist's office.

Ryan, a lion cub, worships his father, Sampson, the brawny, brave, uncontested king of a New York City Zoo. The Wild opens with Ryan listening adoringly as Sampson recounts yet another tale of roaring wildebeests into submission on the African savannah. While the zoo animals cavort, Ryan slips into a metal crate bound overseas for a chance to see 'the wild' for himself. Now Sampson, with the help of his loyal friends Benny the squirrel, Nigel the koala bear, Bridget the giraffe, and Larry the snake must brave the New York City jungle and then the actual jungle to save his son from the clutches of a crazed wildebeest with aspirations to carnivorousness.

3.0 out of 5 stars "Finding Nemo" is a classic. I could lose "The Wild"., 26 Mar 2009

We just wanted "Finding Nemo" and this was the cheapest option (the only way to buy it alone is as a special edition version). "The Wild" is pretty bad though. I wish I'd gone for the extra pound or two and got Nemo with "Monster's Inc" instead. Still my 2 year old likes to see the "animals".

Love Nemo but can't really get the kids interested in 'The Wild'. But it was cheaper to buy this box-set than Nemo by itself? Nemo is great for all ages, my kids love it, the grandparents love it, I love it!

3.0 out of 5 stars half and half, 1 May 2010
This review is from: Finding Nemo/The Wild [DVD] (DVD)
three stars only 'caus id give a one for the wild movie and a five to finding nemo. the wild....movie apparently, is silly, something to possibly give a baby a little giggle, in all likelihood will not captivate a child's attention for very long. Finding Nemo on the other hand, is fantastic and brilliant and i love watching it and as does literally every one i know, of any age.
