Book Description

16 Oct 2008
Why is 'being happy' such an imperative nowadays? What meaning do people give happiness? In this book Abbot Christopher turns to monastic wisdom to offer answers, and to explain that in essence, happiness is a gift not an achievement, the fruit of giving and receiving blessings. Following the same accessible and engaging format of Finding Sanctuary, Abbot Christopher takes different aspects of happiness, examines them, tells us what monastic wisdom has to say about them, and offers us steps towards our own journey to finding happiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Antidote to Modern Life! 1 Nov 2008
Format:Hardcover
Finding Happiness is one of those rare gems of a book that serenely guides you through the trials of modern day life. Father Jamison takes the reader hand in hand to genuine inner joy. "Are monks happy?" His reply, "They are not unhappy." That grabbed me straight away, along with his question about having a happy death! Having never thought about death being happy, on the rare occasions I think about death. I realised that to have a happy death, equates to having a happy and fulfilled life.

With his profound insights, and effective communication, this book remarkably mirrors humanities embedded condition. With such elegance we are guided through many of the reasons that make us unhappy.

Ultimately the dark clouds dissipate, opening the door to inner happiness, if you so choose.

This book is of a solid foundation to make a significant change in your life. Its timing in this troubled era is perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a gem of a book 31 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
An extraordinary book. I thought Christopher Jamiesons "Finding Sanctuary" was a great book but "Finding Happiness" goes deeper. It is challenging and exhillerating and I found it hard to put down. One of the few books I will be reading again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why was I so slow to see this? 9 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
As an ex-pupil of Worth School, I long went with the schoolboy view of almost sheer disbelief that people could choose to leave the very disciplined and rigorous life of a Monk. At the time I was there Fr. Christopher was a house-master of part of the school. The schoolboy view was that he was rather tough, or Crass. My view of him and indeed his mind changed significantly when I managed to have a motorcycle accident and was left comatose. When I came out it was Fr Christopher who dedicated much time to chatting to me to answer the multitude of questions I had "coming back" - so to speak, being left with the body of an 18 year-old and the mind of a seven year-old. Fr. Christopher listened and guided me through this with limitless patience (faced with questions like, "what's this God thing about anyway?",) to being the normal person I am now. I will never forget this and suddenly I find myself listening to The Monastery and The Big Silence and reading his book. It is an amazing book as indeed is the world a better place for having him, and the other monks he shares his life with. The book itself is great and filled with common-sense in a way that is refreshing and true.

Not as easy on the eye as Keating, I'm afraid. However it will be a useful addition to my library and has already been lent out to someone who seems to find the guidance useful.
