More About the Author

Ali Sparkes MEANT to be a superstar singer and actress by now, but that never quite happened... probably because this was in the olden days before StrictlyPopXTalentIdol. She insists she could have done it otherwise.

After National Service as a Pontin's Bluecoat, a stint in cabaret and then singing in cheesy cover bands Ali finally got a proper job in local newspapers before absconding to the BBC in the late 90s. A bit of local radio presenting and producing followed before she chucked in the day job and started writing comedy stuff for Radio 4 (Woman's Hour & Home Truths) and cooking up children's adventure stories.

Since The Shapeshifter: Finding The Fox came out in 2006, she's found her groove.

Her first stand-alone novel, Frozen In Time, won the Blue Peter Book of the Year Award in 2010 and her books, including the SWITCH series, have been translated into many languages from French to Japanese, Polish to Korean...

You can find out more about her books and her public events at www.alisparkes.com. And for fun and games with SWITCH go to www.switch-books.co.uk.

Ali's involved in assorted exciting projects from new novels to screenplays, theatre and animation... but she maintains that if you were to snap her in half she would read CHILDREN'S AUTHOR through the middle, like Brighton rock. Although it would probably be a bit difficult to read, what with the blood and entrails and all that...

I found this book extremely good, one of the best books that involve telekinetics as well as shapeshifters. The blurb is a little misleading as it made me think it only concerned shapeshifters, not clairvoyants. I found it to be well written and rather accurate when it came to describing the emotions and feelings of a 12 year old boy, and Ali Sparkes combined it perfectly with how you'd probably feel as a fox. The one down side is the constant mention of everything having a pre-ordained reason how the future can't be changed, how pessimistic is that? Anyway I found it a great read and I can't wait for the second one "Running the Risk"!

i found this book by accident in a local secondhand book shop where it had been pushed to the back of the shelf, i decided to buy it as i liked the blurb and i'm glad i did. The story is of a young boy called Dax who after cruel treatment from his stepmother finds that he can Shapeshift into a Fox, the story follows his stransformation and what happens after which includes a special boarding school, a nosy reporter and a mystery that could lead Dax to his death. All in all i found this book to be fasinating, especially the concept of shapeshifting and how the author portrays Dax's confusion. I vote this book to be definatly a keeper!!

The story of how Dax discovers he can turn into a fox, and his adventures at the special school he was taken to, where other children with amazing abilities resided, was reminiscent of Harry Potter, but if anything that made me enjoy it even more.

I know it's mainly for children, and I am 66, but what the heck, I really enjoyed it. It is well written, and I like the main characters.... and I am just about to buy the second in the series.

I just re-read this series which was my favourite when I was 10-12 and it is still brilliant to me now. (Sadly, I need to purchase this book again as it is almost falling apart because of how often I read, re-read, and lent this book to friends)

I would recommend it to anyone, especially anyone imaginative :) It is about children/teens who find themselves with unnatural powers and are then taken together at a boarding school to continue their lives while progressing these powers. There are many heart-stopping moments and as the series continues it only get's better! Really, don't miss out on it.

One of my random reads and what a great one it turned out to be. Even though I'm probably 30 years older than the book's intended audience I found it a fascinating read with a fast paced story and I am sure to recommend it to anyone of all ages.
