Since the 1980s Dave Gosney's "Finding Birds in....." guides have helped so many birdwatchers when they have visited parts of northern Europe, the Mediterranean, north Africa and the Canary Islands. I used his original guide to Andalucia when I started visiting the area in 1987 - the first of many trips to south-west Spain. This new guide has been completely refreshed with new information plus updated maps, and while revisiting the sites Dave has filmed both the locations and the birds to provide a very informative DVD.
The choice of sites in the booklet is very comprehensive for western Andalucia starting with the Odiel Marshes and eight locations around the Coto Donana. After this the tour continues to the rather special lakes south-east of Seville and the nearby mountains and gorges between there and Ronda. Then it moves to one of the best raptor watch points in Europe - just above Tarifa. The guide and DVD are really aimed at those heading west from Malaga, while sites further east and north - towards Granada and the Sierra Nevada are not included. The guide does include several locations near to Almeria, but these are 130 miles to the east - so only worth visiting if you are already nearby. Importantly each site is accompanied by GPS references which will help greatly in the field (and helps to view the sites on Google Earth ahead of a visit).
There are several very extensive guide books to the birds of this region, so you will probably question whether this combination offers anything new. It does not really offer new sites, but Dave's informal commentary on the DVD does add a human touch which many people will find very helpful. Even though I visit the region in most years I picked up information that was new to me. The DVD links very well to the book, following the same order and giving page references in case things are not clear. Along with the habitat shots there is plenty of bird footage with natural sound in the background. The only drawback was that wind noise on the recordings was often intrusive - particularly when Dave was speaking to the camera. But I really enjoyed watching the DVD, and was motivated to think about my next visit to the area, which is probably the best benchmark for any bird guide.
