Product Description

Vietnam war hero Luke Ballard thought his miserable childhood, ridiculed as a bastard in a small Alabama town, was behind him. Then his beloved mother, with her dying breath, reveals how she was raped by three men the night he was conceived, and he secretly vows to avenge her.

Luke runs for town sheriff and wins. It's the 60's, and his sights are not only on debasing the monsters who violated his mother, but he must confront corruption, gambling, prostitution and the KKK, rendering his own brand of justice.

Along the way, Luke meets Emma Jean, the much-abused wife of his old high-school nemesis, and falls in love.

As secret, passionate rendezvous and deadly determination turn into a maelstrom of retribution, Luke and Emma must unravel the truth to create their own final justice.

2.0 out of 5 stars Glad I left 13 Mar 2013
I could not connect with any of the characters & felt no empathy to them. The storyline glossed over 2 important issues - race & domestic violence which could have been covered better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not credible 20 April 2013

Took me a while to make sense of this book till I was about one third in when I was about to give up. All the characters were very one dimentional and it was quite incredible that an officer of the law could get away with what our hero apparently did even if it was the 60s. Too many issues skipped over - in fact at times I felt that whole paragraphs if not chapters had been deleted so that the book could finish.

It was overly long any way and the ending was rushed and again quite unlikely. Best bit I have to say was the trial but that lasted a few reading minutes. Would not recommend to anyone I know.

Good story. Could not put it down. A bit different from the normal murder mystery book and set in the American south,.

It took me a while to get into the book and characters but once I did I was hooked. It has great characters some you love and, others you instantly hate and know they are the bad guys. I thought the end was slightly rushed however thoroughly enjoyed reading the book.
