Fun:
I just thought I'd post what I believe to be a fair review of this MMORPG, as most of the reviews I read before I started playing were wholely negative. Although the game has its flaws, I wouldn't say it was a bad game at all.

Prior to playing this, I have played both 'World of Warcraft' and 'EverQuest II'. Both of these games (especially the former) are extremely user friendly. The game takes good care of you for the first 10 levels of gameplay, and makes sure that you always know exactly what you are doing. 'FFXI' is not like this. Even after watching the video manual disk provided, I had very little idea of what I was doing. You are started in a huge city and quests and missions are not marked at all. Basically, before you even begin, you have to spend a good few hours wandering around talking to everyone to recieve your first few quests. I'd advise using a guide to help you hear, just to save on time. As quests are the best way to start gaining money, and killing monsters is the only way to gain experience and level, it's in your best interest to do the two at the same time.

However, after a rocky start and a few days of not knowing what on earth I was doing, the game started to get addictive. You have a choice of five races to play as (Hume, Elvaan, Tarutaru, Mithra and Galka) and six jobs (Warrior, White Mage, Black Mage, Red Mage, Thief and Monk - with more jobs unlockable through quests at level 30). As you can switch jobs whenever you like, you don't need to reroll your character completely if you get bored of one, which is a really nice touch.

Also, the gameplay is nothing like 'World of Warcraft', so there is not much point in compairing the two. Basically, 'Final Fantasy XI' plays like any other 'Final Fantasy' games, therefore the interface and graphical quality mirrors this. Don't expect anything as simplistic or brightly coloured as you would find in 'World of Warcraft' or you will be sorely disappointed. However, if you're a fan of the 'Final Fantasy' series, you will quickly find yourself right at home.

In conclusion, ignore most of the negative feedback you hear about this game. Provided you find yourself a good guide for your first couple of levels and spend time familiarising yourself with your surroundings, you'll be leveling in no time.

Fun:
I've been playing this game for 4 years. Its just fantastic, sure graphically its not the looker and won't win a beauty contest like WoW does, but the gameplay, story and mechanics definately make up for everything.

If your just about to get into FFXI, I suggest you get this as it has the original game, all 4 expansions, and every content update in it, saving you hours of downloading files.
