Good game to play, 1 April 2009
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes Of Time (Wii) (Video Game)
I am a huge fan of the entire FF Series dating back to the original. I must admit when i saw this game on a preview trailer, i wasn't expecting too much from it. However i went out on a limb and decided to get it on the wii and i must admit it got me hooked. The movement is quick and it's not long before you find yourself fighting your first boss. The graphics are not THAT great. That is because of it being a transfer of the DS verision, however i have never been fussed about the graphics, and the gameplay will not disappoint you if you have played FF-CC: Rings of fate as it is the same style for battles and movement.
The only true drawback i find with this game on the wii is the dual screen. It is a bit annoying and if you play on a small tv you might find the text hard to read. Other than that though, SE have, IMO, made a fun game that you can party with 3 others in a team of 4 and dungeon crawl till your hearts content.

Final fantasy. What more is needed to say?, 18 July 2009
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes Of Time (Wii) (Video Game)
I've been a fan of the mainseries final fantasy games for quite a while and decided to see what crystal chronicles is like. I originally brought this game on the DS but i gave that to my friend who got me the Wii version. Although the way they made the dual screen in the Wii version is somewhat odd, you barely recognize it unless you're in a town even though the second screen displays your magic you barely need to interact with that screen much as you just need to press a direction on the Wii remotes D-pad to change character/magic its really simple.
The battle system in in real time and you can equip yourselves with many of the weapons avaliable but depending on your characters race you are more proficient with certain weapons to start off with, for example the Lilty race is most proficient with spears and hammers whereas the Selkie race is more proficient with bows and paddles. Unile the mainseries final fantasy games, you start of with all the magic that will ever be avaliable to you ingame right from the very start (fire, blizzard, thunder, cure, raise and clear) but to cast stronger magic you need to 'stack' the magic rings that appear as you cast one ontop of each other, for example fira needs two target rings placed one above the other to cast, but this magic system does need some getting used to. To switch magic you press left or right on the Wii remotes D-pad and lock the rings to the floor with A (although this depends on your control settings)
As for the characters, you pick your starting race from the selection of either Clavaat, Yuke, Selkie or Lilty and then you pick your gender and your name. You cant really change the looks of your character much (aside from an NPC who can change your hair colour one in a while) but you can change their appearances by adding armor to them which all have unique appearances. As i said earlier your class doesn't limit the armor or weapons they can wield and they learn to use different weapons more proficiently as they level up, however certain late-game items are restricted to certain races but there aren't too many of them.
There is a guild in-game where you can recruit more people to aid you in your adventures, you can choose their race, gender and name like when you make your character at the beginning of the game but they all start off at level 1 and you must level them up manually. There are also 'mercenaries' that you'll meet as you play the game and they'll join you, if you meet the requirements they ask of you, like one mercenary will only join you if you pay them 5000 gil and another you recruit if you find them in a game of hide-and-seek, these characters have start off at certain levels and have equipment already equipt to them when they join you. All the characters you get are waiting for you at the guild where you can add them to your active party, but only 4 people can be in your team at once, thats including your main character, and you can switch which character you play as anytime by pressing the down or up buttons on the wii remotes D-pad. If all your characters are dead and any one time then its game over and you start back at your last save stone or the entrance of the area you died in, so game overs aren't that threatening here.
The storyline is simple and entertaining, crystals have been long extinct when the game starts and your first adventure is to go into the forest to complete your 'comming-of-age ceremony' and soon after one of the village inhabitants falls sick with something called 'crystal-sickness' and you must go into town to find a cure for them. I am rather easily impressed with storylines and generally give most RPG storylines a good rating and this game is no exception. Also, when you complete the storyline once you can play in a harder difficulty setting and you keep your characters and items from the last save! The benifits to this is that you can continue to level up your characters, find more mercenaries, learn new skills and get better equipment!
There is also a multiplayer function which allows you play with friends and help them, or play with random people world-wide with the Wi-Fi connection! As usual, there is a friend roster so you can register your friends 'friend-code' to play whenever no matter where you are (as long as you're within a Wi-Fi access point area that is), but lag can be a problem if you are on Wi-Fi.
Overall, this is a great game to play and thats saying something as this is the first crystal chronicles game i've played! (save for 'My Life As A King' which has totally different gameplay)

Odd ratings, but with due cause., 3 Feb 2010
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

Keep in mind, I have not played much of this game, but for good reason.
If you're going to buy this, DO NOT buy the Wii version - buy the DS Version. The only impression I gained when attempting to play the Wii version I recieved for Christmas was that SE put entirely too little effort in porting this game from the DS version to the Wii - the result is an attempt to fit the two-screen appearance onto one TV screen, with a rather slow-reacting control to modify the size of either screen for 'ease of use' but infact ends up being incredibly annoying.
I'm sure it's a great game and if I had the patience for squinting at my television screen and/or running to find a safe corner while I make the menu screen big enough to read without being murdered by monsters in the process, I'd rate it higher.
TLDR: Buy the DS version -> http://www.amazon.co.uk/Final-Fantasy-Crystal-Chronicles-Echoes/dp/B001U8ILJ8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=miscellaneous&qid=1265211361&sr=8-2
