If you are new to Final Cut then this is the book to get. Very clearly written, it's pretty much a must-have. It neither treats you like a complete computer newbie nor presumes a PHD in computer science, it is obviously aimed at the enthusiast and will get you from whatever level you are at to being a competent user through a number of very clearly set out tutorials, within a matter of only a few weeks. It is obviously written by someone who has a massive knowledge of the application, but who teaches the important bits of that knowledge in a clear, concise and factual way. I cannot recommend this book enough, anything else is a compromise!

Although quite good at movie editing programmes, I still like to have a book to fall back on when learning a new product and this book does it well. I think you need some sort of knowledge of video editing though but the exercises are very good

10 years after Uni when I last edited video tapes I have decided to renew my interest in film making. After bit of editing on iMovie9 I took the plunge with FCE. FCE is not counter initiative but there is a lot in a small package and my old filming making and video editing experience didn't stand me in good stead for editing on a computer. I have found Apples FCE tutorials barely helpful and numerous on line video guides such as are available on Izzy video very good. None of them answer all those basic but fundamental topics that first time FCE users need to understand, why is a clip un-rendered, what does that pop up mean, are dropped frames an issue, what can't FCE find on my firewire port, what is all that stuff in user preferences etc. This book calmly takes you through all of this. My top ten questions were all answered within 5 minutes of browsing this book. I highly recommend FCE Editing Workshop for all first time FCE editors regardless of your experience on iMovie which I'm afraid will count for next to nothing.

This is the second copy of Tom's book I received from Amazon. In each case the DVD was unreadable by my various machines and showed missing and corrupted file extensions. I was able to rename some of the files and copy to my HDD but overall the hassle on a brand new DVD made me send it back twice to Amazon.

The structure of the book and the content from TW are great - but without access to the tuition files it loses its function. I have since sought a refund and ordered the Apple Pro Tutor which looks very comprehensive.

If you're considering a career in the film industry and want to have a working knowledge of a quality digital NLE software...

If you own Final Cut Express (4) and have not put it to good use...

I've had both Final Cut Express 4 and this book FCE4 EDITING WORKSHOP for 2 years now and I've been working diligently with this manual to expose me to what working with a prosumer software is like and this software and book is nothing short of fantastic.

I've always preferred a classroom-in-a-book style of tutorial over your basic your basic guides, but it is only way that you'll use both your mental and tactile senses. This is only short of actually working on a project that you can see how much you actually know by going through each chapter lesson.

Final Cut Express will expose you to the fundamentals of DNLE and this is especially crucial if you have any desires of working with Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Pro X or even the Avid Symphony Suite.

Just to be sure, Apple has discontinued both Final Cut Express and Final Cut Studio (officially) but I'm told by people who work with Final Cut Studio and Final Cut X that Apple is still selling both softwares but you have to call their 1-800 number and purchase either by phone. (Amazon still has a few copies that are being sold by resellers and a few marketplace sellers have posted their eye-gouging prices, if you don't feel the need to call Apple.)

An extremely helpful book: clearly set-out in a logical path with helpful explanations for the uninitiated without being patronising. It's a shame the DVD notwithstanding prominent indication on the cover was not included as it was referred to frequently in the narrative

Even if I am already quite familiar with FCE, this book resulted extremely useful. It gives the right directions, I could understand what I was doing right and what wrong. It helps getting editing done faster and more precisely, full of priceless tips and tricks and many other advices you cannot find in the FCE manual. It is full of examples and images, and it'seasy to follow and understand.
I found information I have been struggling to find on the net for months !!
It comes with a DVD of material to try, which I find very useful too.
I do not give 5 stars, but 4, because it is quite cut for DV material. Nevertheless it provides also information and tailoring for AVCHD, but sometimes I would have preferred more details.
