4.0 out of 5 stars A dark comic gem 6 Jan 2004
Format:DVD
This film is quite simply brilliant. Peter O'Toole delivers a wonderfully over the top performance as declining television legend JJ Curtis, while the supporting cast, especially Aidan Gillen are on top form. Its dark, satirical look at tabloid obsessions with tv personalities combined with the hilarious rivalry between JJ Curtis and dominant newcomer Dave Turner ensures that there are laughs a plenty. Put simply, The Final Curtain is a very intelligent and enjoyable film which you will want to watch more than once. The only drag for me was the lack of any interesting special features, hence the four stars. But don't let that put you off watching this contemporary classic!

The final curtain was a film I watched on cable television one lazy Friday afternoon in the Middle East. High expectations were held immediately as the cast is filled with some real British acting gems and (on most levels) it didn't disappoint. The film is not what one would expect, it is ludicrously dark and twisted, not in a disturbing way but in a farcical way that and at times bordering on slapstick. It requires the viewer to suspend their belief from time to time (I'm pretty sure no British television presenter earns quite as much money as the film would like you to believe) but there is something truly delightful about a film that is filled with talented actors who are convincing in their individual roles and simultaneously is totally over the top. An ideal film for any silly but lazy Friday afternoon.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Title Says It... 7 Sep 2012
By Tim Kidner TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Unlike the others reviewers here, I simply didn't much like this film. The unlikeable, selfish characters, the jumpy schizoid story and the flashy direction.

I'm sure it has much to say, or has said, in the same way that Scorsese's The King Of Comedy, Sidney Lumet's Network and Barry Levinson's Wag the Dog, all about the nastier, crueller side of television but without being as nastily cruel as The Final Curtain appears to always be.

I'm afraid Peter O'Toole swearing at every opportunity isn't a good thing, however adorably crusty he's supposed to be. Maybe I watched the DVD I bought for 66.6p at Cash Converters on a bad night, maybe it does hold much treasure within. I will undoubtedly try it again some day and hopefully get more from it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really quite enjoyable 22 Oct 2010
Format:DVD
I'll admit it, i bought this film purely because Aidan Gillen is in it. And it didn't disappoint really. Gillen is brilliant at being lovably horrible (think straight Stuart Alan Jones) though he does have a rather tedious mockney accent. Peter O'Toole is a wonderful leading man and Adrian Lester does a fabulous job at tying it all together. There's also a lovely little cameo from Mark Williams which is rather enjoyable.
The storyline is a bit jumpy but it kept my intrigued and i certainly didn't feel like i'd wasted an hour 20 of my life. That being the downfall to this film - it could have been much longer and the story much fuller. It was still a viewing pleasure though, and the final scene is both darkly comic and beautifully heartbreaking.
I picked it up for £3 - well worth it!

2.0 out of 5 stars A Frustrating Mess 26 Aug 2003
By A Customer
Format:DVD
"The Final Curtain" is without question the most disappointing film I've seen this year. Made all the more disappointing by the fact that it is a film I have been waiting to see for ages. Peter O'Toole gives an absolutely wonderful performance as a man losing his grip. It's been so long since I've seen him in anything that I'd forgotten what a truly great actor O'Toole is. The supporting cast is uniformly good, especially the always reliable Aidan Gillen as O'Toole's narcissistic young nemesis. Nobody does lovably loathsome like Gillen.

So what's the problem? The film appears to have been heavily re-edited. The editing is unbearably sloppy, particularly in what should have been powerful key scenes towards the film's close. Instead these scenes seem rushed and lifeless.

It's a shame as all the ingredients for a very good film are in here. Perhaps another edit could save this film. As it stands it's a frustrating mess salvaged by the performances of Gillen and O'Toole.
