Firstly let me tell you a little about the quality of the DVD. The 100 or so minutes are taken from the original BBC TV broadcast from 1957. It is in black and white and is 4.3 aspect ratio. The picture quality is pretty good for its age. It is much better that the old newsreel footage we often see. There are very few glitches but the Manchester United Goal is not too clear as the cameraman just switched over his lens as the goal was scored. There are no extras. The commentary is by Kenneth Wolstenholme but there is very little comment on the game or players.
Now to the game. The Villa team Nigel Sims, Stan Lynn, Peter Aldis, Stan Crowther, Jimmy Dugdale, Pat Saward, Les Smith, Jackie, Sewell, Bill Myerscough, Johnny Dixon and Peter McParland.
The United team Ray Wood, Bill Foulkes, Roger Byrne, Eddie Coleman, Jackie Blanchflower, Duncan Edwards, John Berry, Liam Whelan, Tommy Taylor, Bobby Charlton and David Pegg.
I was surprised at what a fast pace this game was played at. It is non stop action all the way through. How on earth these guys were able to control the ball so often is truly amazing considering the type of boots and ball they had.
I am a fan of Manchester United so am biased in my assessment of this match. I found the match uplifting and heartbreaking at the same time. It is hard to believe that less than a year later this Manchester United side were virtually all dead or would never play again. Even though United lose this game it is full of fighting spirit by a side that had been reduced to 10 men for much of the match. In the sixth minute Peter McParland commited a truly dreadfull foul on the United goalkeeper Ray Wood. He should have been sent off and charged with a criminal offence in my opinion. Ray Wood's jaw was broken and Jackie Blanchflower had to go in goal as there were no substitutions in those days. United had the better of Villa throughout most of the match. Ray Wood did come back on for parts of the match and even went back in goal after United scored.
This is the only full ninety minutes of the "Busby Babes" in action and they do not disappoint. If you love Manchester United BUY this DVD, even though they lose 2-1.
