Product Description

Product Description
This text offers an account of film theory, aimed at the cinemagoer and the student. It ranges from the late 1960's to the present, a period when a number of conceptual strands - notably politics, semiotics and psychoanalysis - were woven together in an ambitious synthesis. The authors chart the construction of this synthesis and its subsequent fragmentation, and elucidate the various intelectual currents contributing to it. The book covers the conceptual background of film theory and topics such as narrative, authorship, realism and the avant-garde and postmodernism.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb overview of the subject, 26 Sep 2000
By A Customer
A priceless book; small enough to fit in your pocket but containing all you need to ace a degree course. "Film theory" covers a wide range of difficult issues, but remains clear and directed throughout (the section on Lacan is the best introduction to his work that I have read). It also contains valuable sections on authorship, narrative and politics. Useful both as preliminary guide to film theory and as a summary revision text, I would advise any student to place this little gem at the heart of their studies.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a beginners introduction, 31 Oct 2001
By A Customer
As a University level student I picked this up to introduce me to the subject of film theory. This, however is not an intro for the beginner at all. Its language is difficult to assimilate if you have no previous experience of the subject, and you may need a dictionary and thesaurus on hand to help you through it. I suspect that this book would be much better for someone who was more advanced in the subject and its concepts than the title suggests.
