Review

The performances are immaculate and idiomatic. --Gramophone,Jan'11

With much TV music having a glib,off-the-peg ring to it,Gunning's originality makes him a worthy investment for any supporter of contemporary, tonal classical music. This is powerful and highly agreeable stuff. **** --Classic fm magazine,Feb'11

I have always loved the music for "Poirot" so it was nice to have the version on this album, which is a series of variations with the theme coming at the end.

I also recognised "Rosemary and Thyme," and although a lot of the other material was new to me, I found it all highly enjoyable. The music for "Firelight" is just beautiful, and all the other items have strong themes. There's also a lot of variety with some tracks being really dramatic and others wistful. My own favourite is "Rebecca" with a solo cello taking the lead.

Anyone who likes film scores played by a large orchestra is going to love this.

Outstanding! 19 Nov 2010

I have been a Gunning fan for many years since I heard "When The Whales Came". I almost did not purchase this album because it was a rehash of old themes I already had but that would have been a big mistake for this music and Gunning fan. These new arrangements and presentation are just plain emotion plus from the master of the haunting theme. The recording quality is rich Get Gunnings Wild Afica to go with this Album.
Worthy collection but not the best performances 5 Dec 2010

Christopher Gunning, in my opinion, is one of the best composers of film and TV music, and this collection is fairly representative of only part of his work. However, the intensity of music such as what Gunning wrote for the movie "Firelight" does not come through. I don't know if that's because of the orchestra or the direction, but I can't rate this album higher without the emotional impact that Gunning's music evokes. It's a shame that some of the music from "The Big Battalions" wasn't included, since that soundtrack will soon be unavailable.
