Book Description

28 April 2000 0340692790 978-0340692790
Ranging from the mass culture critics to post-colonial and queer theory, this film reader is an accessible and comprehensive introduction to the main theoretical approaches within film studies. It provides students with an opportunity to engage with primary sources in the form of edited extracts from key critics. It also provides a general introduction and chapter introductions which help to locate the extracts in historical contexts, and explains their contribution to, and interventions in, debates within the study of film. The intervention of cultural studies is crucial to much contemporary work in film, and the editors lay particular stress on an awareness of current transformations in approaches to film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful introduction to film theory 23 Jun 2004
This book contains most of the 'classic' essays from the major strands of film theory. It will make interesting reading for both undergraduate film students and anyone with a keen interest in film theory. If you are doing a film theory course and you want to read essays by the theorists mentioned in your lectures, then this book will more than meet your demands. If you are looking for an introductory guide to film theory and cannot choose between The Film Studies Reader and Approaches to Popular Film (its companion book), then I would strongly advise you to buy this, as it contains the actual essays that the writers of Approaches... refer to. This book misses out on five stars because the essays are often heavily abridged. But you can get the general gist of the writers' arguments. On the whole, I have found this extremely useful as a supplement to my film theory classes.
