Format:Audio CD
The Manchester-based BBC Philharmonic are in cracking form at present, like their colleagues down the road at the Halle Orchestra. Now they turn their attention from Classical to Film music. Not that there is a clear distinction; Ron Goodwin was a superb composer of film music, and you would think listening to this collection that this music is second nature to the BBC Phil. In the past I have had reservations about some symphony orchestras trying to 'do' film music; often their heart didn't seem in it. Well here we get full-bloodied and at times amusing accounts of some great music.
The opening track, '633 Squadron' sets the tone with a stirring account of this famous theme. The music for 'Battle of Britain' is equally inspiring and here we get a five movement suite taken from the film music. Perhaps the best known music on this CD is that used by the BBC for their London Marathon TV coverage. In fact this was originally composed for a film called 'The Trap' starring Oliver Reed, but it was an inspired decision to use this for the Marathon.
Another track I particulaly liked was the main theme from 'Deadly Strangers'- the BBC Phil sound wonderfully laid back in this. The only slight disappointment is that the selection from 'Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines' only includes a brief part of the famous title theme that we all know (and love?).
Otherwise this is one of the most enjoyable CD's I've bought this year. Chandos provide a surprisingly spacious recording given the location (Studio 7, Oxford Road, Manchester).
Recommended to people who like tunes!

Has Goodwin's most thrilling music to some classic films e.g. '633 Squadron', the London Marathon music from the 1966 film 'The Trap', and the soaring 'Where Eagles Dare' theme, played by full orchestra, no holding back. Once you've got over your family making warplane and gun noises to it, you'll want to play this CD again and again, on loud to make the most of it. There are text notes for each piece (see Amazon's contents list), nice anecdotes about Goodwin, and don't miss the film screenshots which are spread through all the different languages in the booklet.

Good selection of film music, well played and would deserve five stars but for the sound quality.
The orchestra sounds woolly and the definition is very poor. Could be something to do with the acoustics but definitely not well recorded.

This CD captivates all the wonderful film scores that Ron Goodwin wrote. My personal favourite is the theme tune from The Trap.

Excellent! & not all war themes, but mostly. This is one CD that you must purchase and add to your collection, you don't have to be a war film buff either, but it helps. Read more
