5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute must... 24 Sep 2009
This is stunningly photographed. It is the Bolshoi at their best. Svetlana Zakharova is a joy to watch and Sergei Filin is one of the most graceful, fluid and outstanding male dancers. Technically spot on. He seems to fly round the stage. When they dance together it is pure magic. This production, loving re-created for the Bolshoi by Pierre Lacotte, is totally enchanting from start to finish. This is a ballet, once seen or viwed, you will want to return to time after time. It is an absolute must for anyone at all interested in the romantic era of clasical ballet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Production, superb DVD 11 Jan 2008
Having seen this production both in London and Moscow and having been a Zakharova fan from her Mariinsky days, I was prepared to be disappointed by this DVD, specially after Zakharova's wonderful dancing was so let down by poor support (I except Bolle from that criticism) in the La Scala DVDs.
However The Pharoah's Daughter DVD pussibly provides the best record of her immaculate technique and the sheer bravura of her work. She is excellently supported by Filin and the lesser roles are extremely well danced. If there is a criticism it is to be made of the ballet itself which has one of the most trite 'plots' of all the Petipa ballets. But, if you can ignore that, you will be dazzled by Zakharova's dancing - this DVD must go to reinforce the widely held belief that, although still well short of her 30th birthday, she is currently the World's Number One.

What a beautiful DVD! What a find! Often the Bolshoi go beyond perfection - they have here! The plot an Englishman goes to Egypt to find treasures and dreams about the Pharoh's daughter, This DVD is the real treasure!
(added) Bought another copy for in-laws. Worth walking all the way to Moscow through a Russian winter to see
Warning Svetlana is so radiant that I am still suffering from radiation sickness after seeing her dance two and a half years ago!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Opulence 11 May 2012

For lover of classical ballet, this is a wonderful visual treat.
Excellent sets, Excellent Choreography, Excellent Dancing, and all those superlatives most of the reviewers have used here.

There is only one problem with this ballet, and that is eminently 'ho-hum' music (Like 'Prince of the Pagodas').
Ricardo Pugni has composed some dazzling pieces, but much of what composed was meant to just give an acceptable background score for the great choreographers (titans) of his day. It was meant to probably give the audience of those days a very lavish piece for the stage, supplemented so to say, by its music, unlike composers like Minkus or Delibes or of course, Tchaikovsky and Glazunov whose music comes by itself ahead of the splendid ballet.

I dont think you will ever get a pure music album like a 'Suite' from this or any of his other works. Even having seen this ballet at least 4 times, most of the music just refuses to 'stick'. On that count, I am more inclined to give this otherwise fantastic production, one star less.

All the same, it is a 'must-own' production for people like me, who worship ballet.

By I. Giles TOP 50 REVIEWER
This is a very sumptuous production of this romantic period ballet originally created in1862 by Petipa. This particular version is by Pierre Lacotte and the current recording was made in HD in 2003. No effort has been spared to produce a completely magical entertainment out of what is a story of pure escapist fantasy. The audience is increasingly very enthusiastic and rightly so.

Essentially the story concerns an English Lord who shelters from a desert storm in a nearby pyramid. He takes opium and thus starts the story of the ballet. In his dream he imagines a mutual love affair with the princess who is entombed in the pyramid. This takes both of them through various adventures which enables a series of fanciful scenarios to be enacted leading to their final union. At this point the storm abates, the opium wears off and he is left with fond memories as the final curtain falls.

Throughout this production every means possible is grasped to have maximum visual effect. The costumes for the dancers in all scenarios are simply beautiful without exception. The stage props and general settings are as generous as space will allow and completely appropriate to the story as it unfolds. The dancing by the corps de ballet is effortlessly graceful as indeed is that of the star roles of Svetlana Zakharova as Aspicia, Sergei Filin as Lord Wilson, Maria Aleksandrova as Ramze and Gennady Yanin in the double role as John Bull/Passiphonte.

The camera work is totally sympathetic and fully captures all the changing moods and settings with a nice blend of close and panoramic shots. The imaging is crystal clear and of good colour rendition throughout.
