A poor follow up to Season 4,
By
This review is from: The X Files: Season 5 [DVD] [1994] (DVD)
Season 4 was always going to be a hard act to follow but it would seem that Chris Carter and co made special effort to ensure that viewers could not draw parallels, and thus compare, between Season Five and preceeding series'. The effort to break the sombre and often bleak tones of earlier episodes forced Carter to go down a more formulaic and at times comedic path.
Whether this new route was in response to pressure from TV bosses to make the show more accessible to the wider public, or to ensure that the upcoming transisiton to cinema was met with good box office sales is unclear. Nonetheless for continued viewers of the series Season Five must be considered a disappointment. The series consists of some fairly lightweight material which was not in keeping with the story development through Series 1 - 4. However the series does contain some genuinely gripping episodes which attain the consistent heights of Series 4. It is around this time that "The X-Files" became a more prominent show in the TV listings and entered the popular culture social consciousness on a larger scale than it had before which perhaps explains the selection of style over substance.

ONE OF THE BEST,

This review is from: The X Files: Season 5 [DVD] [1994] (DVD)
This is probably one of the best collections so far, has a great selection of funny and serious episodes in. For the x files fans would really recommend this but even if you only watched a few this is still great viewing

Best X-Files?,
By
This review is from: The X Files: Season 5 [DVD] [1994] (DVD)
By the time Season 5 came out XFiles was at its peak, this season was followed by the Cinematic release of The XFiles movie. It only features 20 episodes, the movie is meant to count as part of this season. It could be argued that this was the best season ever. The conspiricy theorys are continued throughout this season, but with Mulder in a more sceptical frame of mind, which does get very complicated, is it all a hoax for Mulders benefit? But where this season comes into its own is the stand alone episodes, In 'Detour' the agents are hunted by a Predator like creature and the episode 'Lost Souls' is a classic chiller. 'Bad Blood' is probably my favourite episode ever, it is comedy gold, the chemistry between Mulder and Scully is fantastic. Its not all great though there are a few slow episodes revolving around Scullys daughter, but dont let that put you off, this is classic stuff thats well worth the money.
