Amazon.co.uk Review
The feature film The X-Files: I Want to Believe is a satisfying if unspectacular installment in the X-Files series, taking place an unspecified time after the show's nine-year television run. Former agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) is now a doctor, while Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) is being hunted by his former agency and living in seclusion. He and Scully are summoned back by a case involving a missing agent and a former priest (Billy Connolly) who claims to be able to see clues to the agent's whereabouts psychically, though his initial search turns up only a severed limb.

Don't expect the usual cast of characters; the FBI has completely turned over (except for the George W. Bush portrait), and the only reason Scully and Mulder are back is because agent Dakota Whitney (Amanda Peet) remembers his success on similar cases involving the inexplicable. Don't expect the same rogues' gallery either; unlike the previous X-Files feature film, which was inextricably linked to the series' convoluted mythology arc (and served as a bridge between the fifth and sixth seasons), I Want to Believe is a stand-alone piece that makes use of the series' roots in horror/sci-fi and moody Vancouver, B.C., locales. Also unlike the previous film, which was almost self-consciously shot for the big screen, this film is on a smaller scale, like a double-length episode of the series. But it's still a good reminder of the creepy vibe that hooked fans for years. And the relationship between Mulder and Scully? It seems to have resumed pretty much where it left off, at least when you take into account the long period of separation. But stick around for the end-credit sequence to take in all the possibilities for the future. --David Horiuchi, Amazon.com

Synopsis
For the devoted viewers of THE X-FILES, there can be few things more exciting than hearing the familiar notes of Mark Snow's theme song at the beginning of THE X-FILES - I WANT TO BELIEVE. This cinematic follow-up to the series picks up years after it ended, but the characters are still the same ones that audiences loved. Fans that followed the show religiously won't be surprised to learn that Mulder (David Duchovny) is currently living in hiding, still researching the paranormal while he grows a shaggy beard. Meanwhile, Scully (Gillian Anderson) is working as a doctor at a Catholic hospital. When an F.B.I. agent goes missing, the bureau calls on the pair to return to their old work. The paranormal element of their case is found in Father Joe (Billy Connolly), a former priest who is having psychic visions and leading the team from the F.B.I. to evidence to help them solve their case. Mulder and Scully return to their roles of believer and sceptic as they join in the search.
Just as in the show, I WANT TO BELIEVE is a genre-bender that combines science fiction, horror, and thriller. In fact, the film seems like a two-part episode of the show--and that's meant as a compliment. Though made six years after the series' finale (and 10 since the first cinematic incarnation), the show's central elements are intact, especially the interaction between Mulder and Scully. For those who weren't fans of the show, I WANT TO BELIEVE offers chills similar to THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and THE BONE COLLECTOR--but minus the gore. The show was always more about the unseen horrors, and the film works well as it follows its predecessor's lead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good as a thriller, but not as an X Files film, 16 April 2009
By KM (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
After years away from our screens, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully (David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) return in `The X Files: I Want to Believe'. An FBI agent has gone missing in Virginia and the only hope that they have of finding her is by using a priest who is a psychic. The FBI also call in ex-agents Mulder and Scully to use their expertise in the paranormal to help find out what is going on.

I've been a big fan of The X Files since it first started and have watched the episodes again and again and I've been looking forward to seeing this for ages. I finally got to watch it the other night and I had a lot of mixed feelings when I got to the end. As an X Files film I was disappointed. There was no real supernatural/paranormal/extraterrestrial goings-on, no monsters or aliens lurking in the shadows, Scully wasn't really part of it all until the end, no conspiracies to be seen at all, so it didn't really feel like an X Files episode or film at all. As a serial killer thriller though, this was fantastic. It was creepy and atmospheric, had some really good characters and a decent storyline, it was suspenseful and exciting and kept me guessing until the end. To be honest, it felt a bit like Kiss the Girls but with Mulder and Scully instead of Alex Cross. I really did enjoy this film but like I said before - it isn't X Files.

The Blu Ray picture was very good and was extremely crisp throughout with no graininess in the darker scenes. The sound however was a little quiet - I had the speakers turned right up and it still wasn't all that loud.

Overall I personally think it was a bad move by the writers to stray away from the sci-fi horror format that the show is liked so much for and so I think if you're watching this expecting it to be like the show you will be disappointed. If you watch it not expecting it to be like the show and are a fan of crime thrillers then you will more than likely enjoy this.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's been a while.. but they're back!, 11 Nov 2008
If you haven't seen this yet then I suggest you watch it, as it is very good. Don't listen to the critics who have said this is crap because it isn't. And it doesn't matter if you haven't seen all the seasons of 'The X-Files', as it stands well as a movie on it's own. Obviously there are some elements that reflect back to the series but that's more of an addded bonus to the X-Files fans.

One of the main things I liked about this movie was the way the writers have decided to go more into Mulder and Scully's relationship which they didn't really bother with too much in the last film. I also liked the fact that it stayed very true to the tone of the TV show and is just as intense as a lot of the episodes were.

So whether your an X-Files fan or not this film is definitely worth checking out because it's very intriguing and gets you thinking. And I'm sure it will look really good on blu-ray. I'm curious to see what kind of scenes they will add in to this director's cut of the movie so I will be getting this soon.

2.0 out of 5 stars Its not an awful film.........Its just not X-files!, 17 Dec 2008
By UnluckyBauer007 (York England) - See all my reviews
I rented this DVD out the other day and once I finished watching it I thought I would have a look on these pages and see the abuse from all the X-philies againts this movie! as the movie has so little to do with the X-files it is untrue. BUT no people seem to love this movie???? I just don't get it, especially the fact people are liking it to the early great x-files episodes??

As i said in my reviews title it's not a awful film, its certainly not a good one but its not awful, the main problem is the film is just nothing to do with x files or even the paranormal really! Back in 1994 I was massive X-Files fan, ICE, FIRE & SQUEEZE are some of my most favorite epsiodes of any TV show. But as the seasons went on I lost interest, as most people did (including David Duchovny). BUT 14 years older, I was happy to hear the X-files was back in a another feature length movie, especially as Mulder and Scully's only other Big Screen outting was far from good!

So i watch "I want to believe", the movie starts off enjoyable and interesting story about a missing FBI Agent, and the only clue to the her whereabouts are ramblings of possible Physic (Billy Connolly). So who's the best guy to investigate such a case? YES a formally disgraced and abandoned FBI agent Fox Mulder and a now fully fledged Doctor Dana Scully.
So an old chap with visions - Ah you say there is you paranormal aspect - and yes true, BUT that is as paranormal as it gets! forget a interesting story about Ghosts, Ghouls, Goblins, Bugs or even Aliens. Forget any of the classic X-files episodes I mentioned earlier you wont find any of that here.
The story its self is just a very by the number sort horror/thriller that just happens to have Mulder and Scully in it!. The film is very excited to tell you how our two beloved ex FBI agents relationship ended up, they just leave the whole plot line of the movie as a distant 2nd priority!

I will just say David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson reprise the roles well and it was nice to see them again and the blu ray looks great especially on the snowy scenes.

So maybe the truth is out there.its just not very interesting!
