I've been using Filemaker since 1997 - it was the database I used for my theatre history PhD. I love the templates of Pro 11. It has made my life a little more saner - because I don't need to go to all the trouble of customising them very much at all. For instance, I do London theatre reviewing for an on-line publication - so one database allows me to put together the whole theatre scene in the diverse and interesting London theatre scene very easily. Love it.

Part of my job involves analysing data so I am familiar with a well known spreadsheet package. However, a lot of the data is contained in different documents so I decided a database was more appropriate. Bento, my previous database, was not up to the job. It is good at what it does, but that is it.
So I tried the "Big Two", running Microsoft Access through a third party app (I'm on a Mac) and Filemaker Pro natively.
Filemaker has a steep learning curve, but makes much more sense than the other package- I ran screaming from that one within 30 minutes!
So, why haven't I rated it as 5*? Partly due to the fact I can't use it properly yet! I have several ideas, and more come to mind each time but I am still not comfortable with it at the moment. I have ordered the "Missing Manual" book to go with it and then we will be well away.

Have been using Filemaker since its early Mac days (1990s).
Judge software by its use without referring to manuals. Found Filemaker to be easy to use with great flexibility.
Have used Access but have never found it particularly 'user' friendly - certainly not a piece of software that can
be used without the manual.

Powerful program but difficult to master.
Once again an expensive piece of software that comes without any printed documentation in English. There is an English PDF file on the DVD but it is very basic. Read more

Filemaker
We upgraded from a very old copy of Filemaker to 11. Seamless transition and much greater functionality. Look forward to making new databases.
