Fiio E6 Portable headphone amp A step up from the E5 FiiO have upped the game a bit from the old E5 Keeping things affordable while offering some of the sonic benefits of it's more expensive rivals. The FiiO E6 has 3 EQ settings -3dB +3dB and +6dB. The 3 EQ setting give flexibility to adjust the sound to suit your headphones as a lot of aftermarket headphones can promote a more bassy sound the -3dB setting can be used to level the sound out while the +6dB setting adds a warmth to the bass and mid-range without over doing the bass. The FiiO E6 is not simply a device to make the music from your device louder but it improves the sound quality the same idea as buying an upgraded amplifier for your home system. These images show a direct comparison between the E5 and the new E6. While the E5 was a heavy little metal clad amplifier weighing in at 30g the E6 with its plastic body is more portable weighing in at a mere 16g making it more comfortable to have hanging from your headphones. The FiiO E6 also comes with a removable transparent belt clip and a lanyard loop on the top edge which gives you more carrying options whether you chose to have it hanging round your neck clipped to your coat or belt or just hanging from your headphones. The E6 is powered by a light lithium battery which will give up to 10hrs of listening pleasure from its 16mW output between charges. Charging is by mini USB so you just need to plug it into your PC or laptop to top up your listening time no need to replace the battery! This is my first portable headphone amplifier, so I have nothing to compare to.
I can however compare it to the sound I was getting through my Cowon S9. Although the Cowon produces a fantastic sound, put this little beauty in-line and the headphones come to life!
I am using it with the Hifiman RE-ZERO's and I have to say it is the best audio experience I have ever had. The E6 has 3 EQ settings, all of which make a noticable difference to the sound. If one is a bit flat sounding for your liking, flick the switch and hear the bass rumble.
This will make your earphones go louder, if that's what you're looking for, but also it will make the sound more rounded. Deeper bass, even sub-bass. Clearer mids and more extended highs.
At this price it is an absolute steal. If you are in the market for a small, ultra portable amp then look no further. It even comes with a spare clip, just in case you manage to break the very solid first one.

This amplifier works fine, but I have two issues with it.
1) There is an audible hiss when you crank up the volume. It is only audible during silences, so it does not bother me too much, but it would still be nice if it weren't there.
2) This is more of an issue. The amplifier gets interferences from the signal of my mobile phone. This is an issue since I bought it precisely to use it together with my phone. I experimented a little and saw that simply wrapping the amplifier with my hand prevented the noise, so I guess some kind of signal shield would solve this. I hope they implement this in future versions of the product, because I am pretty sure I am not the only one using a phone to listen to music.

As a previous owner of the E5 I will say that this is an improvement but only in some ways, FiiO have taken the time to add a preset equalizer a nice addition to the device, and also hold. The sound quality is still the same and gives your music a better experience with enough lower end, which avoids over powering the highs. The major issue is the clip at the back of the device used to secure the amp to clothing, back of the cover for your mp3 or running armband, has been changed from horizontal to diagonal position, whilst this looks nice, it now means that the amp struggles to stay secure, especially if you are using a line out. The body of the device and clip is now made of plastic too; I can not help but feel this will not be as durable as the metal clip.

Does what it should but not without issues
I bought the Fiio to use with my laptop because my audio out wasn't loud enough and I found music lacking in bass. The Fiio greatly helps with this. Read more

Love it briliant little gadget at a very good price!
I use my e6 with my sony xb500s and the bass that they can handle is amazing and then i put the e6 on and they are even more bassy and still clear,i hope it lasts :)
