Product Description

The FiiO E17 and the L9 cable in one bundle. You asked for it - AVshop delivers.
Enjoy.

FiiO E17 INFO: The FiiO E17 Alpen portable headphone amplifier with USB audio decoder (DAC) is designed for dual-functionality. The E17 Alpen both replaces PC on-board sound cards as the primary audio decoder which can lead to an increase in audio quality as well as provide high quality sound amplification and drive high-powered high-end headphones. The E17 Alpen supports different inputs including optical and coaxial. The E17 Alpen is a step up from the older FiiO E7 providing a wider support for various input devices as well as overall more functionality and control. The E17 Alpen was built to be a much more complete product than the E10. The most significant addition was the ability for it to serve as a portable headphone amplifier. With batteries built into the Alpen you can unplug it from USB and take it for a spin together with your iPod. In addition to that they also added features such as coaxial and toslink digital inputs. The Alpen is the successor to the E7 and there are great improvements on aspects other than just the sound.

There are many good reviews about Fiio E17 from audio specialists in websites, blogs, on-line magazines etc.
I don't know who makes the mistake but my review about Fiio E17 is completely different.

My test setup is:
- Fiio E17 connected via USB to my laptop playing music from Foobar 2000 (through WASAPI plugin).
- Audio files are FLAC and high bitrate MP3's (most of them 320kbps)
- Sennheiser HD 555 headphones are used for the listening

I compared Fiio E17 with:
1. My laptop's audio output
2. Ainol Novo 7 Flame tablet
3. Ipod touch 3rd gen.

The results are:
My laptop's audio output is so crappy that everything else surpasses it significantly.
Between Fiio and my Ainol tablet, the tablet is the winner for one reason: It has a fuller sound especially in the midrange.
I 've really spent many hours in listening to the same songs in both devices in order to decide which one is better.
Finally I concluded that the voices lack body and presence in Fiio which restricts the listening pleasure to bass, treble and detail because the only advantage for Fiio is that is it gives better detail and instrument separation.
This means that if you listen to classical music only, Fiio is clearly the winner. But in songs that involve vocals, Fiio loses easily from Ainol.
I found unacceptable that a device that costs about 100 pounds to have such a problem with the midrange and I sent it back to Amazon for a refund.
Finally, Fiio in comparison to the Ipod's native audio output is much better in clarity, detail and instrument separation but loses again in the midrange. Fiio wins in total but I still don't understand the Fiio's "cheap" midrange.
Is it a problem with my headphones?

used with AKG K701 headphones - great sound but perhaps not as detailed as more expensive amps, plenty of volume/gain available, excellent EQ features, very happy with it for the price

Wow, what have I been missing all these years with my in-ear headphones connected to my MacBook Pro/iPad/iPhone!! Connect this little gem and both the songs and headphones sound like they are a different quality altogether. And to blow me away completely I connected an optical cable (Ixos from Amazon) to my MacBook Pro into the spdif connector on the E17, this is another step up in quality again!
It's very well built and is a steal at £99. I was so impressed I decided to go all out on a pair of higher impedance full over-ear headphones (AKG Q701's) which my Apple gear wouldn't have the power drive. I am now in audio heaven playing full lossless from iTunes on these amazing phones through my amazing E17. Even without optical on the iPad it is awesome. Can't recommend this little powerhouse highly enough!

Very pleased with this little Amp (and DAC). It provides good batterylife and has a low noise, even when powered by USB. It can drive most headphones with ease; i use it with a pair of Sennheiser IE80 in ear monitors. When using it with a laptop or pc it doesn't require you to install a driver, Windows automatically detects it as a soundcard. Sound quality is fine; maybe not best in class but certainly value for money. For the price, the build quality is outstanding.
