Fighting Them on the Beaches
I bought this book following a visit to the D-Day beaches in Normandy. I wanted to know the full story behind those poignant relics and the local cemeteries full of the bodies of young men. It's an incredible story of an operation that was massive in scale and planning, but mostly in human courage. So many men lost their lives but not in vain. The D-Day landings were crucial not only in defeating Hitler but also in so much that went on after the war. Nigel Cawthorne gives the details of the operation in a thorough account, which, though emotionally detached (there are no first hand accounts of the horror of battle), gives you all the information you need to paint your own mental picture.
