'Sherratt is a unique voice in detective fiction, capturing the terror of abused women far better than any male writer.' Mail on Sunday.

From the author of No.1 bestseller Taunting the Dead comes The Estate Series - where drama meets crime.

When Caren Williams finds herself back on the estate she fought so hard to get away from, little does she realise she'll be living opposite her arch-enemy, Gina Bradley. Gina thinks she and her family rule Stanley Avenue so when Caren starts to become popular, she decides to hit her where it will hurt the most – she wants her husband.

Lonely and depressed, Ruth Millington finds it a constant struggle to get through the dark times. Spiralling out of control, maybe she should let Gina's husband help her out when he comes calling.

Twins Rachel and Claire Bradley, took control of the girl gang, the Mitchell Mob, when their leader was sent to a juvenile detention centre for assault. But Stacey Hunter is out now and wants to hold the position of top dog again. No one will back down - let battle commence.

Brawling in the street, fighting on the square and conforming to peer pressure – it all comes down to holding your nerve. But this time not everyone will survive the notorious Stanley Avenue...

FIGHTING FOR SURVIVAL follows on from SOMEWHERE TO HIDE and BEHIND A CLOSED DOOR but can be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel.

Praise for Mel Sherratt

‘There's a lot of young crime writers that I've just met for the first time. There's one called Mel Sherratt; she's very interesting.’ Ian Rankin.

'A writer to watch out for.' Mandasue Heller.

‘Uncompromising, powerful and very real – an important new voice.’ David Mark.

‘The worst terrors are always those that hide closest to home.’ Elizabeth Haynes.

‘Gritty and atmospheric.’ Niamh O’Connor.

What the readers say:

‘I totally got caught up emotionally in this book and spent the last portion in tears and holding my breath as I turned the page. Be prepared for a story that will touch your heart and give you something to think about for days to come.’

‘What a fantastic read. I didn’t realise they could get better, but this is by far the best one so far. In parts I sat and cried, you get so attached to the characters, and want to know what’s happening with them next.’

‘Absolutely gripping. Did not want series to end. Real people and so true to life. Best I have read in a long while.’

‘Mel Sherratt writes in a way that has you visualising the characters and making you pleased you didn't grow up on The Estate. This book brings a tear to the eye on many occasions.’

About the Author

Mel Sherratt has been a self-described "meddler of words" ever since she can remember. She lives in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, with her husband and her terrier, Dexter (named after the TV serial killer, with some help from her Twitter fans), and makes liberal use of her hometown as a backdrop for some of her writing.

More About the Author

I write crime, psychological thrillers and suspense. Some of my work is dark and violent and my background when I worked as a housing officer makes for a unique point of view at times. My inspiration comes from authors such as Martina Cole, Lynda la Plante, Mandasue Heller, Kimberley Chambers, Jacqui Rose and Elizabeth Haynes.

TAUNTING THE DEAD is part police procedural/part psychological thriller. It has been a standalone for two years but I am now writing two more books with Detective Sergeant Allie Shenton as a main character and creating a new series.

THE ESTATE SERIES are a mix of women's fiction, psychological suspense and crime thriller. They are too dark for women's fiction alone - although the subject matters and issues are often referred to in this genre - too light in places for crime thrillers, and often not enough for the psychological suspense readers out there. I call it Grit-lit - where drama meets crime. There are three at the moment, available individually or as a box set. Book 4 will be coming in October 2014.

WATCHING OVER YOU is dark in places, light in places, erotic too - where obsession and friendship turns to murder.

I live in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, with my husband and terrier, Dexter (named after the TV serial killer) and makes liberal use of my hometown as a backdrop for some of my books. You can find out more at my website www.melsherratt.co.uk or I'm on Twitter at @writermels

5.0 out of 5 stars Breath Taking Read! 24 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Fighting for Survival is the Third book in the Estate series and after reading the first Two I could not wait to get my hands on this book.
I was captivated from the first page and feel like I've been on a journey to a place where poverty, theft, abuse, bullying rape, gang crime and murder seems to be the norm, a world that most of us never have to see yet against such depressing conditions the characters who live on the estate are trying to overcome the odds stacked against them.
I totally got caught up emotionally in this book and spent the last portion in tears and holding my breath as i turned the page .....Be prepared for a story that will touch your heart and give you something to think about for days to come

This is absolutely the best series I have read this year and am desperate for the next book by Mel Sherratt
Highly recommended!!

Thankfully this is set in a place so far removed from my life but still recognisable. the violence and hatred of family against family the root of which is long forgotten is very scary. A really good read

Read the first 2 in this series and loved them, but this even better. You don't need to read the first 2, but it gives you a good background. This is the best book so far, cannot wait for the next

As always this novel had me gripped from the beginning. I previously read behind closed doors and this follows on where that left off.
Absolutely love this author, however I'm struggling to get any housework done as she makes the stories so compelling .

I found this compulsive reading and could not put it down. Someone I know is a housing officer and the antics of the residents on this estate are sadly not exaggerated.

I picked this book up at 3pm today and finished it at 11pm, stopping only to cook tea and tidy up. I simply could not put it down. Strong female characters and an equally strong storyline will keep you engaged to the very end.
