Product Description

Product Description

The first part of this book deals with disease, health, and diet mainly in Knightswood prior to, during, and immediately following World War II. The second part is concerned mainly with the education of primary school children in the same area and during the same period, although there are several ventures beyond Knightswood and into Glasgow generally. This is not intended to be an academic treatise but is more in the form of a collection of experiences from a number of men and women who spent their formative years in Glasgow's largest between-the-wars housing development. The accounts are equally applicable to all of Glasgow Corporation's pioneering garden suburbs. In addition to anecdotes there is a great deal of easily verifiable "official" information; for example, details of Glasgow's highly successful mass chest X-ray campaign in the 1950s and a fair amount of factual material concerning the Scottish education system operating in the early to mid 20th century. Perhaps this modest book, although concentrating on health and education, will go some way to giving Glasgow's largest garden suburb the attention it deserves. After all, this "land of hope and glory" has nurtured many people who came to the forefront of public attention and in a variety of occupations, having survived the diseases of childhood prevalent in the period covered and benefitted from a 'guid Scottish education'.

Nostalgic Memories 24 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
I lived in Knightswood from the age of 4 (1948) and it has many happy childhood memories. My dad lived there until 2010 (when he died at 91) and I've visited him regularly there. Many of the people and places mentioned in the book I knew, so I really enjoyed it. I now live in Bournemouth, but still feel a Glasgow/Knightswood girl. Bryan Cromwell wrote a very warm book, not at all as dry as perhaps the title suggests. I thank him for having written it.

Bryan has pulled out all the stops here with a well documented account of pre-war life in the Knightwood area of Glasgow. You get a real eye witness feel about the book, then again it is an eye witness account. A must for all Glaswegians and yon posh folks from, Knightswood.

Memories 30 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
I liked it as I was living next to the school in the time frame of the book and it brought back memories good and not so good but it made our generation what we are today. No nanny state living for us. Initially good reading which lost its bite toward the end. Thanks Brian for putting it together.
