5.0 out of 5 stars Expected little but am delighted 10 Aug 2009

I bought this game as I had seen it in the shop, it received decent reviews and it had just been reduced in price.

The game to me is really excellent. I have not bought any of the previous incarnations of the game so was coming to it fresh. Having spent a considerable amount of time customising my character I was ready for battle. You start out in a small gym with your trainer and fighting with all of the head gear on. I found the controls pretty intuitive in fact, you punch with the right stick and move around with the left. The buttons push, grab or do your special attack or cheat. I found it a little awkward at first but once you get your head around counter attacks, which are highly satisfying and do a lot of damage, I got into the startegy of the thing. Timing is everything.

When I was first challenged in an arena, from my gym, I was genuinely nervous. Which is quite an achievement as I am a fairly jaded game player. I have never flet cheated when I am ko'd. It is usually because I have gone crazy punching. You adjust and get back in.

There is a huge range of fighters, massive customisation and astonishing graphics. The commentry gets a little repetitive in places but is generally helpful..... I enjoy this game way more than I was expecting to. It is a game I expected to play in gaps in between Call of Duty but in fact it has become one of my most played games. If you haven't played any of the other games and are coming to it fresh I would be suprised if you didn't enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A real "new version" 23 July 2009
Platform for Display:Xbox 360
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Unlike a lot of EA's other sports titles, which amount to more or less roster updates for the new season of a given sport, Fight Night Round 4 is a very real, very serious re-invention of the Fight Night series. The graphics, which were amazing in R3, are now even better. The sound engineering is an improvement, too, with the addition of many more ambient noises, as well as better-defined actions sounds, such as the subtle grunt of a straight to the body, or the hard smack of a hook to the cheek. Finally, there is a tonne more voice acting, which adds a dose of much-needed variety into the commentary.

The Career Mode has now been renamed Legacy Mode, and along with the new name comes a whole host of new features to allow you to customise your boxer's appearance, name, and even entry music! The additional voice acting extends here as well, with a long list of potential last and nicknames which will be announced and used during the commentary - a small, but highly immersive improvement.

Underneath this cosmetic changes lies a game mechanic which, while familiar, will force even long time fans of the series to re-examine their fight techniques and habits. The Total Control scheme has been adjusted, and a number of new "style" factors have been added into the equation - notably arm length - which culminate in a generally more patient, more realistic boxing match. Don't worry though - those one punch knockouts in the first round can, and do, still happen!

On the down side, the interface - especially that of the Legacy Mode - is clunky. It can take forever to actually get to a fight, and if you need to move around between game modes, you should be prepared for a few minutes of navigating menus and waiting for things to load. Ultimately, however, this is a small price to pay for what is undoubtedly the best addition to the Fight Night series yet.

1.0 out of 5 stars The fourth round of an epic!!!! (spoiled by bugs) 15 July 2009

ORIGINAL REVIEW

This game is truly, truly excellent!

I looked forward to this game for some time but I must admit that when I first played it with my girlfiend on my birthday I wasnt that impressed. The graphics were superb but the game seemed too random. We both just moved the conrol stick round till one of us got knocked out. This lead me to think that the game lacked the capacity to reward genuine gaming skill. However I was very wrong. The game is very different to round 3 which I was used to playing. It takes time to come to get used to the new conrols and when you do the game is very much about skill in both the two player and the single player modes.

It is the single game (legacy mode) that is the games ace card. The graphics are incredible but the game play is even better. You start off as an amatuer and try to become the greatest of all time over a long career. When you turn pro you start fighting in small, dusty clubs before moving onto tv fights at venue's like the Royal Albert Hall (Royal London Theatre)and eventually fighting at Madison Square Garden and in Las Vegas.
The games physics are what really makes it so playable. Punches connect hard, glance and land on different places on the head causing a variety of different reactions. So no fight or knockout is ever the same.
Its very fun. You can even record and save your guys knockouts or fighting clips and save tem to watch back in highlight mode! This is a brillaint feature that allows you to review your guys career even after he's retired! (harddrive needed for highlght mode!)

My own career has gone very well :) My guy has just won a brilliant 7 round fight for the Middlewight title after 31 fights with 30 ko's.
